Myanmar border clashes hit Thai soil

Myanmar’s military offensive in Karen State has spilled across the border into Thailand, with drone and artillery strikes landing on Thai territory and prompting urgent security measures. The attacks centre on Min Let Pan village in Myawaddy Township, where regime forces are attempting to break through resistance defences.

Local sources report that around 1,000 regime and allied troops are advancing from multiple directions, supported by reconnaissance and suicide drones. Resistance fighters from the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and its allies have held the line since seizing Min Let Pan last November, but daily bombardments are taking a heavy toll. “They are firing around 20 shells every day,” one fighter said, describing relentless assaults that have destroyed homes and killed civilians.

Thai authorities confirmed shells and gunfire struck Huai Maha Wong village in Tak’s Mae Sot District, forcing border closures and warnings to residents. Informal crossings used by displaced villagers to access food and check on homes have now been shut, deepening the humanitarian strain.

The offensive is backed by regime‑aligned militias including the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army and the Border Guard Force. According to the Karen Peace Support Network, the military carried out more than 1,400 attacks in Karen National Union territory between October 2025 and March 2026, leaving 135 civilians dead and hundreds injured.

As smoke rises over the frontier, the fighting underscores how Myanmar’s conflict is destabilising its neighbours. For border communities, the war is no longer a distant struggle but a daily threat crossing into their own villages.
