Asylum row erupts after suspect flees Ireland over American mother's murder

Questions are mounting over Ireland's asylum system after a migrant wanted for questioning over the killing of an American woman reportedly remained in the country despite having his asylum application refused.

The man, identified by Irish police only as a "person of interest," is believed to have left Ireland for Turkey before the body of 43-year-old Jamey Carney was discovered at her home in County Kerry, triggering an international murder investigation.

Suspect reportedly appealing asylum refusal

According to Irish media reports, the Jordanian national had been refused asylum but was allowed to remain in Ireland while appealing the decision.

The reports claim he retained possession of his passport throughout the appeals process and was able to board a flight from Dublin to Istanbul before detectives launched their investigation.

Irish police have not publicly identified the man, and neither An Garda Síochána nor Ireland's Department of Justice has confirmed reports concerning his immigration status.

International manhunt underway

Detectives believe Carney died late on Monday evening. Her body was discovered the following afternoon by her 13-year-old daughter.

By then, the man police wish to question had already travelled to Dublin Airport and boarded an international flight.

Investigators have issued alerts to ports, airports, railway stations and international law enforcement agencies as efforts continue to locate him.

Reports suggest detectives fear he may have travelled on to Jordan, a country that does not have an extradition treaty with Ireland.

Relationship under investigation

Irish media report that the man arrived in Ireland in 2024 and had been living in state-provided accommodation while seeking asylum.

He is understood to have later begun a relationship with Carney and spent increasing amounts of time at her home in Killarney.

Carney, originally from New York, frequently described herself on social media as a "New Yorker in Ireland" and referred to being in a mixed-nationality relationship.

Police have not commented publicly on the nature of their relationship.

Immigration system faces fresh scrutiny

The case has reignited debate over Ireland's asylum and immigration system, particularly the practice of allowing unsuccessful asylum applicants to remain in the country while appeals are heard.

Critics are questioning how an individual whose asylum application had reportedly been rejected was able to retain travel documents and leave the country before investigators could question him.

The Irish government has faced growing political pressure over immigration in recent years as record numbers of asylum seekers have arrived amid a housing shortage and rising cost-of-living pressures.

Political pressure growing

Immigration has become one of Ireland's most divisive political issues, with recent opinion polls indicating widespread public concern over the scale of migration and the pressure it is placing on housing, public services and state resources.

Successive governments have defended Ireland's international obligations to process asylum claims while insisting border controls and security screening remain robust.

As the murder investigation continues, the circumstances surrounding the suspect's reported immigration status are likely to come under increasing political and public scrutiny.

Irish police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward while urging the public to avoid speculation that could hinder the ongoing investigation.
