William tells England to 'hold their heads high' after World Cup heartbreak

England's dream of lifting the World Cup came to a dramatic end after a 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina, with Prince William leading tributes to the Three Lions despite the painful exit.

The Prince of Wales said he was "gutted" by the result but praised the squad for what he described as their outstanding tournament, urging the players to "hold your heads high."

Argentina snatch victory late on

England looked on course for a famous victory after Anthony Gordon fired them ahead in the 55th minute following a tense, scoreless first half in Atlanta.

But Argentina, the defending world champions, produced a stunning late comeback, scoring twice in the closing stages to book their place in the World Cup final against Spain.

The South Americans once again demonstrated why they remain one of international football's most resilient sides, punishing England's missed opportunities before sealing victory in the dying minutes.

Prince William praises England's campaign

Writing in a personal message released by Kensington Palace, Prince William congratulated the team despite the heartbreaking defeat.

"The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament. Hold your heads high."

The message was signed simply "W", indicating it came directly from the Prince, who is patron of the Football Association and a lifelong football supporter.

William has frequently been seen supporting Aston Villa and regularly attends England internationals.

King and Prime Minister join tributes

The Royal Family also paid tribute to Gareth Southgate's squad, posting a photograph of captain Harry Kane embracing Jude Bellingham after the final whistle.

Their message read: "Commiserations to Harry and the team. While you Three Lions may be licking your wounds today, you remain the pride of a nation – and will rise again."

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer echoed the sentiments, saying he too was "gutted" by the result.

"Tonight wasn't the result we all hoped for," he said. "But this England team has given it their all. The passion and energy they've shown representing the badge has made us all proud."

Argentina march into another final

Argentina's victory underlined the remarkable consistency that has made them one of world football's dominant forces in recent years.

Having already secured the Copa América and the previous World Cup, they now move within one match of adding another global title to an already glittering era.

England, meanwhile, leave the tournament with plenty of positives after producing one of their strongest World Cup campaigns in years, even if their hopes were ultimately dashed by one of football's most experienced and clinical international sides.

For the Three Lions, the wait for another World Cup triumph goes on, but many believe this talented squad has shown it has the quality to challenge again at the highest level.

Exactly.

Not "hold your heads high".

But rather "off with their heads".
