Cambodia torches $500m of seized drugs

PHNOM PENH – Cambodia has destroyed more than five tonnes of illicit narcotics and precursor chemicals worth an estimated US$500 million, in what officials described as a powerful show of zero tolerance towards traffickers.

Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sar Sokha oversaw the burning ceremony in Kandal province on Tuesday, declaring the move a clear reflection of the government’s vision to build a drug‑free Cambodia. “This clearly reflects the government’s vision to build a drug‑free Cambodia,” he said, praising law enforcement for their relentless efforts to maintain peace and public order.

The substances were seized during operations in Phnom Penh and Kampong Chhnang in 2025. Authorities say the crackdown has intensified this year, with more than 12,500 suspects arrested in the first six months of 2026, including 225 foreigners. Police confiscated 2.38 tonnes of narcotics in that period alone.

Cambodia does not impose the death penalty for drug trafficking, but possession of more than 80 grams can lead to life imprisonment. Officials stress that the scale of recent seizures highlights the growing threat posed by transnational crime groups operating across the region.

Alongside the destruction, the National Authority for Combating Drugs (NACD) and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) held a three‑day forum in Phnom Penh to strengthen prevention and public education. The meeting, co‑chaired by NACD Secretary‑General General Meas Vyrith and UNODC representative Li Li Jiang, focused on vulnerabilities linked to regional conflicts and trafficking routes from the Golden Triangle.

“Increasing geopolitical tensions and regional conflicts have created opportunities for transnational criminal groups to expand illegal drug production and trafficking,” Gen Vyrith warned.

Officials highlighted new awareness campaigns in schools, workplaces and communities, while the Ministry of Information showcased its NoDrug mobile app aimed at educating young people and countering misinformation.

The event coincided with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Trafficking, underscoring Cambodia’s determination to confront the evolving nature of narcotics crime. Sokha said innovative strategies and closer collaboration among stakeholders would be essential to meet emerging challenges.
