The Thai woman at the centre of the widely shared confrontation on a Bangkok BTS train involving six Italian tourists says the dispute has now been resolved after the group apologised and police imposed 1,000-baht fines.

The incident, which spread rapidly across social media and triggered widespread debate in Thailand, also prompted public apologies from both the Italian tour operator involved and the Italian Embassy over the tourists’ behaviour.

Case brought to an end

In a social media post, the woman said each of the six Italian tourists seen in the viral video had personally apologised to her. As part of the agreement, she said she would remove photographs of the tourists from her social media posts so the matter could be concluded on amicable terms.

She also provided an update on the criminal complaint she had filed following the confrontation. According to her post, police settled the case by imposing a fine of 1,000 baht, despite the offence carrying a maximum penalty of 10,000 baht.

The woman said officers advised her to accept the lower penalty in order to bring the matter to a swift conclusion.

“Although I personally feel the amount may not be a severe punishment for them, I respect the officers’ discretion and advice,” she wrote.

No further legal action expected

The woman added that, with the case now concluded, the Italian tourists would no longer be able to pursue legal action against her over the actions she took while defending herself during the incident.

She emphasised that she had never intended to encourage hostility towards Italians or any other nationality.

“From the very beginning, all I wanted was to defend my dignity and my rights after being insulted and harassed,” she wrote, while thanking those who had supported her throughout the controversy.

A fine of 1000 thb. But i am wondering if that is legal. is there a law or a rule that states that talking in the BTS is forbidden? And how about the Thai woman as she is not allowed to record and publish the video without consent?

She can accept the apology, but i think she is not aware of the damage she has done to the tourism sector and name of her country. With all the activities like Tomorrowland and promoting Thailand as a tourist destination, this act of her will have a big impact. Tourists will surely consider to come to Thailand, as it is another silly action. Just to name a few is being fined for vaping, which is only for foreigners, last week a skateboarder fined for skating on a road, motorcycles being fined for not wearing helmets, now talking in a group in the BTS, some time ago Thai people complained about tourists who were not wearing t-shirts in a shop or were drinking and laughing in Pai, and several more.. How do Thailand think about the tourist image of the country by doing such actions? No wonder people are more and more avoiding Thailand, that is the real damage. Not a few kids that are talking to eachother

Yes, it has left the taste of xenophobia in the Pad Thai .......

Number of times I have endured screaming THai kids by a hotel pool or in restaurants and woe betide you if you complain!

So she got an agreement from the Italians to not counter-charge her with illegally filming them and posting it to Tik Tok. But wait a second. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. I may be. But isn't it true that anyone can file a criminal complaint? You don't need to be the victim per se? If so, then anyone viewing her videos, which constitute evidence she provides against herself, then anyone can file a complaint. Even people reading this story on Aseannow???

If they had to pay a fine, then she should too. Her language and behaviour was equally offensive.

Dont worry. Kharma will take care of it. Pray for that everybody in their own religion. It really works, better than file a criminal record.

I wouldn't expect anybody actually to step forward and file a criminal complaint against Sugar of the BTS.

I did ask whether should would have went down the same path if it was a bunch of Thai kids. There could be an element of racism behind it, or, perhaps she may not have done it with Thai kids because she knows they probably would have assaulted her. 🙂

It is about flipping the finger. If I was there, I would have thrown them out of the BTS.

And her calling one of the kids a "mother <deleted>?" Free pass, why, because she's Thai???? Would she have called a Thai kid the same name, in Thai? I doubt it.

No one else appeared to have a problem with the kids. If she has a low tolerance level, have had a bad day etc, that's on her.

Her sense of entitlement is not surprising.

I've never seen Thai kids behave like that on the BTS. They are generally quite respectful. She did make a bit of a mountain out of a molehill but the way the kids responded was disgusting - I would be ashamed if they were my kids.

Waiting for someone to post the news of Thai students fighting in a station.....

Normal cultured Thai women do not talk like this woman using the F word and other English language. It appears to me that she has been influenced by a foreigner or perhaps her working environment.

Or works at one of the high end hotels by the river? Isn't that the direction they were all heading?

Was she actually "insulted and harassed" by them before she stuck a camera in their faces and complained about the noise they made?

There will be a day that tourists from the US, EU, India, and China, have enough of the silly witch hunt on foreigners and don't come to Thailand anymore. It would surely change the attitude of the people which have now complains about foreigners. Their country their rules, and tourists don't want to be a part of it....

Talked of this with the Mrs last night...... I was surprised how much she was on the Thai side of the issue. We were in a large open air restaurant, so I suggested I would go to a nearby table and tell the guys to stop smoking, and she should go to another table where the kids were a bit wild and noisy. She said they aren't bothering her.

I see the issue was resolved by paying money.... some things don't change here. They still need the foreigners cash!

Absolutely pathetic, the whole event.

A group of kids that were excited and vulgar and an adult Thai with a foul disposition and no class. I had hope for her when she started try to assist the kids but she had a short fuse and lost it. Not a big deal and if I was there, I would have just smiled and took it all in. Actually I enjoy others making fools of themselves. No violence and at worse a foul mouth Thai was offended.

anyone who uses the BTS and MTR regularly knows that people are expected to be quiet and respectful. most passengers want some peace and quiet and want to hear the station announcements ... it's true that thais can be very loud when it comes to music or social gatherings, but the BTS and MRT are different. thai and foreign passengers generally respect that ...

the fact is, this group of students had already shown poor behavior before the BTS incident. there was no reason to believe they would behave differently during the rest of their stay in thailand ... what would be the next negative incident?

i do disagree with those who put the blame on the thai woman. she tried to step in and ask the group to show some respect. she was facing around a dozen loud and overexcited (aggressive gesture) students, all much bigger than her, while they dismissed and belittled her instead of listening to an adult ...

criticizing her because her english was limited or because she wasn't trained in conflict management completely misses the point. she was simply trying to defend the basic respect that thai people expect on public transport ...

from my point of view, she deserves credit for speaking up ...
