The Thai woman at the centre of the widely shared confrontation on a Bangkok BTS train involving six Italian tourists says the dispute has now been resolved after the group apologised and police imposed 1,000-baht fines.
The incident, which spread rapidly across social media and triggered widespread debate in Thailand, also prompted public apologies from both the Italian tour operator involved and the Italian Embassy over the tourists’ behaviour.
Case brought to an end
In a social media post, the woman said each of the six Italian tourists seen in the viral video had personally apologised to her. As part of the agreement, she said she would remove photographs of the tourists from her social media posts so the matter could be concluded on amicable terms.
She also provided an update on the criminal complaint she had filed following the confrontation. According to her post, police settled the case by imposing a fine of 1,000 baht, despite the offence carrying a maximum penalty of 10,000 baht.
The woman said officers advised her to accept the lower penalty in order to bring the matter to a swift conclusion.
“Although I personally feel the amount may not be a severe punishment for them, I respect the officers’ discretion and advice,” she wrote.
No further legal action expected
The woman added that, with the case now concluded, the Italian tourists would no longer be able to pursue legal action against her over the actions she took while defending herself during the incident.
She emphasised that she had never intended to encourage hostility towards Italians or any other nationality.
“From the very beginning, all I wanted was to defend my dignity and my rights after being insulted and harassed,” she wrote, while thanking those who had supported her throughout the controversy.
