Have PC prices gone through the roof?

Featured Replies

Just had a look on Lazada at Lenovo AIO's, like Thinkpad and Ideapad, and the prices seem to have skyrocketed since when I looked 12 months ago. At that time there were plenty under 20K, now very few, most 25K and up.

Has there been some radical price increases with PC's generally?

Yes they have increased massively and will almost certainly continue to do so.

It's about the memory and storage. AI companies buying it all up which prompted the lower end manufacturers to realign and produce a lot more of the server hardware, Micron for example abandoned consumer RAM in favour of ECC server ram.

This will get far worse before it gets any better.

Yes, Ram Memory prices have exploded and there is a extreme Industry shortage.

Not gonna get better for 2+ or more years.

Even then I doubt prices will come down much.

Pricing on DDR-5 ram is brutal.

It's all due to RAM. All the foundries have switched to making HBM RAM for AI cards, which commands much higher prices and has a near infinite, inelastic demand curve right now. Because of this, ordinary DDR5 RAM for computers, previously the high volume low margin option to keep your factory going at 100%, now needs to be priced much more expensively to directly compete with the substantially better margins on HBM. That means EVERYTHING is more expensive. A Raspberry PI now is selling in the actual market for over $400. $400! For an SBC that is nothing more than a toy. But it has 16GB so the price has to give you nosebleed. A YouTube channel I follow (https://youtu.be/7f2BjPPJEWg?t=777) is trying to order RAM right now and was told there was a 5 YEAR backlog. Who orders electronic components and can wait 5 years for delivery?

If you can wait a few years, prices may start to come back down. Motherboard manufacturers are beginning to qualify CXMT RAM from China to work with their boards, which gives a 4th option for DIMMs beyond the big 3. A glut is coming in the future again for sure, but not anytime in the immediate future.

Were you in coma?

This is how to get around this problem. I have bought a few high end refurbished laptops on Lazada with a varying success. The biggest issue will be battery, but if you find a reputable seller and pay a bit more it will be working fine.

Unless you want to play Cyberpunk, a laptop like this will run you around 8000b. I don't have access to lazada from Canada but the prices should be similar, no?

Correct, everything that has memory chips inside has increased in price. Android TV boxes have increased by 25% in the last 3 weeks, (that is the decent stuff, not the 900 baht crap)

I blame the AI hype or all this madness, but that bubble is already starting to burst.

That bubble is just beginning.

Remember the dot com bubble and how it destroyed the internet?

Well the internets multiple orders or magnitude larger now than it was back then.

We ain't seen nothing yet - it's never going to end because whatever they produce will never be enough to meet demand.

Yes

It’s all down to the price of chips.

25,000? The first laptop I bought in Thailand cost me 78,000 for a very modest specification (only needed for text stuff and reading the internet, not gaming or streaming (which didn't exist then).

I also paid 18,000 for a pocket-sized digital camera before camera phones existed. Times change, prices plummet (tvs are the same). Sometimes they rise again for reasons given above, but compared to before...... I'll take that.

Not sure about computers but phones seem to have. I was going to buy a phone at 9000 bht and then a week before I did the price shot up to 14000 and has practically stayed there since with the lowest being 11500 since . Now also some sellers are asking 2000 more for the same model depending on the colour of what you want . The black version is 2000 less than the titanium colour on some sellers 🤯

I am still very happy with my 2015 Apple iPhone SE, because I only want it for telephone calls, something my friends don't seem to understand, but when I see them constantly looking at their phones scrolling up, down, sideways and whatever, then I realise that they can't be without a phone like that accompanying them wherever they go and it's even more obvious in restaurants, where you can have a table of four people not uttering a word to one another, but continuously on their phones.

I have a Lenovo PC at home which I bought after my HP computer sort of gave up the ghost (which I rectified with a new battery from a reputable second-hand dealer) and that suits me fine for downloading movies or whatever, as well as sending emails to friends overseas – – what else could a man want??

RAMmageddon.

Yeah I have had same phone for last 5 years and it's been brilliant and cost less than 8000bht . Only reason need a new version is it doesn't have 5g which is a pain when making video calls abroad as the call quality goes wonky at times .

Blows my mind anyone would pay more than £3-400 for a phone nowadays !
