Trump Says Iran Strikes Paused Pending Rapid Deal

Featured Replies

Donald Trump said he has cancelled planned strikes on Iran, saying the move depends on a deal being agreed “rapidly” with the country.

In a post on Truth Social, the US president said he had been asked by Iran and other Middle East states to “hold off” on any attack. He said the “perimeters” of a deal had already been worked out, adding that it would include reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending Iran’s nuclear threat.

The comments followed US media reports that Washington may have been preparing new, intense strikes on Iran over the weekend.

US Warns Americans Across The Middle East

Earlier on Saturday, Tehran accused the United States of escalating tensions. It said any regional state that cooperates with Washington would be “engulfed by the flames of war”.

Meanwhile, the US government urged Americans in the region to remain alert and be ready to leave “should there be escalation”. A security alert issued on Saturday said Americans should exercise caution, maintain heightened vigilance, and be prepared for flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures and possible travel disruption.

Reports Of New Strike Planning

Multiple sources had told CBS News, the BBC’s US media partner, that the US and Israel were planning what would be among the harshest bombing campaigns to date against energy infrastructure targets in Iran. CBS reported that the plan was discussed during Trump’s cabinet meeting on Friday.

In his Truth Social post, Trump said the United States was “locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran”, at “levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II”.

He added that cancelling the attack would be “for the future benefit of the world” and that it would also support “the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran”.

Iran has not yet responded to Trump’s announcement.

Trump’s comments also came amid reports of concern from regional partners. Axios said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke to Trump on Saturday and “expressed concern” about the prospect of strikes, while Reuters also reported the call.

Background: Escalation After Ceasefire Breakdown

During the Friday cabinet meeting, CBS News reported that Trump was heard saying while reporters were still in the room: “We’ll be hitting them [Iranians] very hard. At some point, they’re going to say, ‘We just can’t take it anymore.’”

Washington and Tehran have traded escalating strikes and counter-strikes since a ceasefire in April aimed at pausing the war fell apart in June.

Earlier this week, the US said it completed a “heavy wave” of strikes against Iran in retaliation for an attempted ballistic missile attack on American forces in the region. The US has blockaded Iranian ports and bombed Iranian sites. Iran has fired missiles and drones at US assets in countries across the Middle East and targeted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil shipments.

The US and Israel began launching strikes against Iran on 28 February. The campaign and ensuing fighting have driven significant fluctuations in oil prices.

Trump say the “perimeters” of a deal had already been worked out. Does that mean we are going around in circles?

Calling it the “perimeters” of a deal is the same vague language he used with his now infamous “framework of an agreement” lines!

Lots of talk about outlines, not much substance inside. Describing the edges of a deal instead of the terms it more like circling the issue rather than landing it.

Sure..."paused"....just to allow the stock markets to fall, then buy shares at a lower price...and the next day to make threats and bomb oil refineries to make the prices and the stock shares go up. America is no less a corrupt regime, on the same line as Russia, Ukraine or Iran.

Huge anti-Trump billboard in Tehran: Iran's leadership remains defiant.

Iranian military officials have rejected US President Donald Trump's claim that Tehran asked Washington to refrain from further attacks. The Iranian news agency Mehr quoted the officials as saying the statement was "nothing but another lie." "Our armed forces are on high alert and prepared for any eventuality," they added.

Tehran also rejected Trump's demand regarding the Strait of Hormuz. "As long as the US continues its hostile actions, the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed," the Fars news agency quoted a source close to the Iranian nuclear negotiating team as saying.

Saudi Arabia asks Trump for restraint

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman, has called on Trump to de-escalate the situation during a phone call. The Crown Prince—the de facto ruler of the influential kingdom—urged dialogue to prevent further escalation, according to the state news agency SPA. Every effort must be made to calm the situation and pave the way for diplomatic solutions, with the aim of preserving regional security and stability and preventing a slide into a broader conflict with regional and international repercussions.

Maybe because it is running out of fuel?

The U.S. Navy uses F-75 naval diesel in the Middle East with the exception of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.

Furthermore: U.S. military commanders have warned the Pentagon that the Navy faces severe strain and potential capability shortfalls in the Middle East, specifically noting a shortage of destroyers to simultaneously sustain long-term missile defense for allies like Israel and protect regional U.S. forces.

Everybody in his cabinet likely told him that sticking with plan A was not working, it isn't going to work, and it would just lead to more depletion of US munitions, more bankruptcy of the treasury, and absolutely nothing in the way of positive results.

You lost the war Don, you conducted it with ignorance, foolishness, arrogance and way too much chest thumping, and it's time to just back down and accept the humiliation. And while you're at it please fire Little Petie, he's a hazard to America's health.

Two reasons (in my view) nowadays it’s much easier to attack large slow targets via drones and they are hard to eradicate 100%+ the insurance companies are demanding 10% of the value of ship and cargo for one trip!!that’s expensive!!!not to mention the threat of mines!!!it’s quite the mess old donald created ehh??hey magga tired of winning yet?

Give it a day and we’ll be right back where we were before. If only we could bypass Trump. He also needs to grow a pair and tell Beebee to deal with this stuff on their own. What little brain cells he has left aren’t helping the situation in any way.

Wait, you do know this is another Trumpy Translation" .... yes??? The word he was most likely told was "Parameters" but his massive ego does not allow him to make any kind of public correction, no matter how petit the problem.

parameters

A parameter is a useful rule, limit, or value that defines a system, computer function, or statistical population.

“He said the “perimeters” of a deal had already been worked out”

First of all, the doofus probably meant to say parameters. Sheesh.

And secondly, would this be anything like the ‘concepts’ of a health care plan that he has been going on about for years and years?

In Donald Trump’s mind, he solves all the problems in the world and stops all the wars. In reality, not so much. He and his clown car cabinet actually just make everything (much) worse, it’s just one giant clusterf***.

Thank You. Exactly! And this is the "Leader of the World?" God help us ...
Parameters -

A parameter is a useful rule, limit, or value that defines a system, computer function, or statistical population.

He knows it’s a lost cause and knows he’s doomed. So what else can he do? Make as much money as he can before he’s gone.

Indeed- and also time perhaps to try to fill up with much needed ammunition?

Anyway, back to commenting on why Trump has paused on his massive strikes - perhaps a shortage of fuel, rapidly diminishing ammunition stocks, and the "third nations" ( gulf states) from which these attacks are launched are probably becoming increasingly reluctant to take part. They cannot fail to be aware that sooner or later the US will stop and bugger off. Iran will remain as an implaccable enemy. The Iranians are rather good at being implaccable enemies!

They (the Gulf States) have probably worked out that the US is losing, and they want an off ramp.
