Clacton By-Election Odds

The betting markets leave little doubt about the outcome, even with 34 names on the ballot. The current prices are:

Reform UK (Nigel Farage) — 1/20
Count Binface (Count Binface Party) — 25/1 (SpreadEX)
Monster Raving Loony Party — 500/1

At 1/20, Farage is priced as an overwhelming certainty, implying a win probability comfortably north of 95%. He is as short as 1/400 with one bookamker.

That's despite recent polling pointing to some erosion in his personal popularity and in Reform's national standing since his 2024 victory.

Although I fully expect Farage to win I think he will be humiliated by just how many would actually prefer and vote for a bin to him. Only another 10 days to go.

Reform UK's deputy leader Richard Tice is being investigated by the parliamentary standards watchdog over an allegation he failed to declare an interest.

The investigation was opened on Tuesday 28 July and was published on the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner website on Monday.

Tice, the MP for Boston and Skegness, said the complaint related to a Commons debate about Israeli influence and whether he should have referenced his register of interests.

Reform said Tice did not mention in his 22 June speech that he had been on a trip to Israel last September, funded by a pro-Israel lobbying group.

The investigation relates to Rule 6 in the parliamentary code of conduct, which states: "Members must always be open and frank in declaring any relevant interest in any proceeding of the House or its committees, and in any communications with ministers, members, public officials or public office holders."

The Parliament's guidance to the code of conduct states that MPs can refer to their entry in the register of interests but adds: "Such a reference will not suffice on its own, as the declaration must provide sufficient information to convey the nature of the interest without the listener or the reader having to have recourse to the Register or other publication."

So public figures shouldn't have scrutiny and don't need to abide by ethical standards guidelines?

Sammy Wilson of the DUP is also under investigation until the same code. Is that "the establishment" going after him too? Why?

They're accusing Tice of not declaring that his trip to Israel was paid by a pro Israel lobbying group.

The opposite of antisemitism!!

Tice himself has often accused others of antisemitism, e.g the Labour Party, the Green Party. He even claimed that 20% of British MPS were antisemitic.
