US Vice President JD Vance has come under fire after joking that America did not want "President El-Sayed" following progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed's surprise victory in Michigan's Democratic Senate primary.

Speaking during an anti-fraud roundtable at the White House, Vance praised the Trump administration's efforts to tackle government waste before adding: "We don't want the next administration, whoever – God forbid you're gonna have President El-Sayed in three years."

He said he did not want a future administration undoing what he described as the government's work to eliminate fraud and save taxpayers money.

The remarks triggered an immediate backlash online, with critics accusing Vance of using El-Sayed's name to provoke fears over his Muslim heritage.

Trump claims election was 'rigged'

The controversy came just minutes after President Donald Trump questioned the Michigan primary result on Truth Social.

Trump alleged that Wayne County, home to Detroit, had a long history of election irregularities and claimed the result could still be overturned by problems with vote counting and mail-in ballots.

Without providing evidence, he warned supporters to prepare for "another rigged election" and urged Republicans to unite behind Senate candidate Mike Rogers ahead of November's election.

Progressive victory shakes Democrats

El-Sayed's victory over establishment-backed Congresswoman Hayley Stevens has been viewed as another sign of the growing strength of the Democratic Party's progressive wing.

The upset follows a string of recent primary defeats for establishment Democrats, highlighting mounting frustration among grassroots activists who are demanding younger candidates and a more left-wing agenda.

Another flashpoint in bitter campaign

With Michigan expected to remain one of the key battleground states in November, the primary result has already intensified the political rhetoric on both sides.

Vance's comments and Trump's claims of election fraud are likely to keep El-Sayed firmly in the national spotlight as Republicans seek to portray the progressive Democrat as too radical for mainstream voters, while Democrats accuse the White House of inflaming political divisions.

Yawn, A very predictable backlash of "outrage", Vance merely mentioned the name of a guy he did not particularly want to see as president, at no point did he mention any racist or islamophobic reasons for this. In fact he clarified he reasons, stating clearly he feared the guy in question would undo the governments work on fraud and save money . Had he said he did not want to see AOC as president he would presumably have been called a misogynist Had he said that he himself should not be president he would be slammed as a self loather, the Guy can't win
