Two rescued after four swept into sea off Da Nang

Four people were swept into the sea by large waves while taking photos at Mui Nghe on Da Nang's Son Tra Peninsula on Saturday morning, triggering a major search-and-rescue operation that has so far found two of them alive.

The four were part of a group of six who had walked to the coastal location at around 6am on August 8. At about 7.30am, the Son Tra Border Guard Station received a report that four members of the group had been washed into the sea.

Fishing boats join rescue effort

Those swept away were identified as Truong Thi Phuong, 24, Mai Thi Phuong, 24, Tran Thi Anh Duong, 24, and Nguyen Thai, 30. The two other members of the group were Truong Van Dong, 20, and Vu Hong Cam, 19.

The border guard station immediately called on fishing boats operating nearby to help search for the missing tourists, while other authorities were alerted to join the operation.

At around 8am, fishing boat DNa 37141-TS, operated by local resident Nguyen Phu Hong, reached Nguyen Thai and pulled him from the water.

Thai was conscious and in stable condition. He was later transferred to the SAR 274 rescue vessel, operated by the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center Region II, for medical care.

Second tourist found alive offshore

A naval vessel found Truong Thi Phuong alive at 3.30pm, approximately two nautical miles off Mui Nghe, making her the second member of the group to be rescued.

The Son Tra Border Guard Station continued to mobilise fishing boats and vessels from other agencies to search for Mai Thi Phuong and Tran Thi Anh Duong, who remained missing.

For foreign residents and tourists visiting Da Nang, the accident is a reminder of the risks around exposed coastal areas when waves and sea conditions change quickly. Mui Nghe attracts visitors for its coastal scenery and photography, but this case shows the danger of getting close to the water when conditions are rough.

The search for the remaining two members of the group was continuing.
