Songkhla School Goes Online After Former Teacher Allegedly Posts Gun Threats

Hatyaiwittayalai School in Songkhla moved classes online for August 10 and 11 after a former South African contract teacher allegedly shared firearm images and threatening messages following his dismissal. The dispute involving Pieter Johannes Dreyer reportedly began over salary, Social Security contributions and employment conditions before he began publicly discussing wider allegations concerning the school and education system. A school-appointed committee determined that he had breached or failed to comply with his employment conditions, leading to the termination of his contract effective July 24. School officials said firearm images, audio recordings and provocative messages were subsequently shared through Line, prompting them to preserve the material as evidence and file a police report. Police later determined that Dreyer had already left Thailand, but local authorities and immigration officers were instructed to remain vigilant while security at the school was strengthened.
