A former South African English teacher at Hatyaiwittayalai School in Songkhla has issued a public apology after allegedly posting messages threatening to shoot teachers and administrators.

Pieter Johannes Dreyer was accused of sharing the messages, along with an image of a firearm, in a Line group chat after his contract with the school's English Programme was terminated.

Apology to students and former colleagues

In a video apology, Dreyer addressed students, former colleagues, parents, alumni and others affected by his comments. He said some of the language he used could have caused fear and concern, particularly at a sensitive time for school violence.

Dreyer said he did not intend to hurt anybody and completely rejected violence. He maintained that his comments were meant to raise concerns that he wanted addressed properly, but accepted that the way he expressed them was wrong.

He said he regretted making people feel afraid and understood that recent events had made people especially concerned about the messages.

The former teacher added that he had already apologised in the group chat, but wanted to repeat his apology to all his Thai students.

School safety concerns heightened

The alleged posts came shortly after a shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School which killed nine people, adding to public anxiety over safety in Thai schools.

Dreyer said any disagreements or concerns he had should be handled through appropriate procedures and should not be linked to threats or violence. He said he hoped people would accept his apology, adding that he respected the safety of students and the wider community.

He also pledged to take responsibility for his words and be more careful in future.
