Kota Kinabalu hotels lose bookings amid water cuts

Hotels in Kota Kinabalu are reporting cancelled bookings and shortened stays as continuing water supply problems force properties to depend on limited reserves and expensive private tanker deliveries.

Fourteen hotels affected

The Sabah and Labuan chapter of the Malaysian Association of Hotels said 14 properties had been affected by the latest disruption. While several hotels began experiencing problems on 8 August, the impact widened from 12 August as supply difficulties continued across the state capital.

Association chairman Suresh Ramasamy urged the Sabah Water Department to stabilise and restore supplies as quickly as possible. Hotels have been drawing on reserve tanks, but those supplies are limited and were never intended to support normal operations for an extended period.

Properties have also tried to purchase water from private tanker operators. However, tankers are in high demand from homes and other businesses across the affected area, making deliveries difficult to secure and adding substantially to operating costs.

Tourism businesses feel the impact

The disruption has already caused some guests to cancel rooms or leave earlier than planned. The hotel group warned that the effects could spread beyond accommodation providers to tour operators, restaurants, transport companies and other businesses that depend on visitor spending.

Industry representatives are particularly concerned about damage to confidence as Malaysia promotes Visit Malaysia 2026 and Sabah prepares for Visit Sabah Year 2027. Prolonged uncertainty over basic services could make travellers reconsider bookings or choose alternative destinations.

The association has requested priority tanker support for affected hotels and clearer information on when normal water supplies are expected to return. Reliable restoration estimates would allow operators to manage reservations and communicate more accurately with guests.

What it means for foreigners in Malaysia

Travellers with upcoming stays in Kota Kinabalu should contact their hotel directly to confirm that water is available and ask whether any facilities are restricted. Guests already in the city may experience reduced services, room changes or requests to shorten their stay if a property cannot maintain its reserves.

Visitors should retain booking correspondence and check cancellation terms before changing plans. The disruption is affecting specific hotels rather than the entire tourism sector, but conditions may vary quickly while supply repairs and tanker deliveries continue
