Vladimir Putin’s security regime is taking extraordinary steps to conceal where the Russian president is — from decoy motorcades and fake offices to an armoured train designed to evade tracking. As Ukrainian drones reach deeper into Russia, the Kremlin’s obsession with secrecy appears to be entering a new phase.

Putin’s movements disappear behind a maze of decoys

According to reports cited by United24Media, Russian security teams have deployed empty presidential motorcades through Moscow to confuse anyone attempting to track Putin. The deception reportedly extends to his residences, where near-identical offices have been created in the Moscow suburbs and Sochi.

Investigations have found tiny differences between the rooms, including door handles and wall seams, allowing researchers to identify where footage was actually recorded.

Even television has become part of the disguise

The Kremlin’s information machine also helps blur the timeline. Officials can record meetings days or weeks before they are broadcast, creating the appearance that Putin and senior figures are appearing live.

But the illusion has sometimes been exposed by simple details. Different hairstyles, references to events that had already happened and even changes in office plants have helped investigators identify supposedly live footage as pre-recorded.

The secret train waiting in the shadows

When Putin does travel, the skies may be the last place he wants to be. Reports say he increasingly relies on a heavily protected special train equipped with communications systems and facilities including a gym and spa.

The train is reportedly able to use restricted railway routes and concealed stations, making it harder to track than a conventional presidential flight.

A security state closing in on itself

The precautions were stark during Putin’s August visit to Novosibirsk. Mobile networks were disrupted, residents were reportedly ordered away from windows and even digital fuel-price displays were switched off as his convoy passed.

The measures underline a growing contradiction for the Kremlin: the more Russia insists the war is under control, the more elaborate the precautions surrounding its leader become. As Ukrainian strikes push deeper into Russian territory, Putin’s world appears increasingly built around avoiding being seen — and avoiding being found.
