Thai authorities have offered help to a Thai-British man and his 85-year-old grandfather after footage of their rundown home in Nakhon Ratchasima spread widely on TikTok.

The video, posted by TikTok user @top1968 showed Tar, who was identified only by his first name, and his grandfather, Watcharapong Thongtaem, living in poor conditions at a house on Muk Montri 22 Road.

Home repairs funded after online appeal

The property reportedly had no suitable bedroom or bathroom and few basic facilities. Tar is the main carer for Watcharapong, who is partly paralysed and struggles to move around.

Watcharapong also has high blood pressure and gout. He had gone without medical treatment for about a year, as his limited mobility made trips to hospital difficult.

After the post drew public attention, Nakhon Ratchasima Municipality Mayor Wannarat Chankunakul visited the home with staff from the municipality's Public Health and Environment Office and Social Welfare Division.

Officials assessed the family's living situation and provided 80,000 baht to improve the house, with the aim of making it safer and more suitable for Watcharapong's needs.

They also examined the elderly man's medical history and arranged further treatment through Public Health Centre 3. The centre obtained his records from Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital so doctors could prepare appropriate care.

Tar thanked the TikTok user and the authorities for their help. He said his priority was to ensure Watcharapong could live comfortably, as his grandfather had raised him since childhood and was like a father to him.

He said he had at times felt discouraged by his circumstances but had chosen not to give up. People could not choose the circumstances of their birth, he said, but could choose to improve their lives.

Online commenters praised Tar's care for his grandfather. Some called on influencers and celebrities to consider employing him in livestream sales, while others urged local businesses to offer work that could help him support Watcharapong.

I hope it turns out okay for both of them. Glad to hear the grandfather is receiving medical treatment,

I think it's great that the urgently needed help is being offered and provided here.

But I ask myself, couldn't the son have at least ensured some order and cleanliness himself? Or was there no broom?

A little bit of sweeping won't help. It's embarrassing for those who have nothing to offer but st@pid remarks.

My answer to that BigNumber:

No, a little sweeping doesn't create a new house or whatever. But a little self-help is also appropriate in such a situation to make everything a little more bearable. Garbage doesn't get rid of itself. If you can no longer move around without worrying about later junk, then you have to help from time to time.

It was your insensitive remark that precipitated the comment, own up. You deserved the criticism. People who are discouraged and depressed often don't keep up housework at the same pace as people better off. they shouldn't be judged. You should count your own blessings.
