Dolly Parton, Country Music Legend, Dies Aged 80

Featured Replies

Dolly Parton has died aged 80, with her death confirmed on Tuesday in a video posted on Instagram by her nephew Bryan Seaver, who also served as her head of security.

Parton died on Tuesday morning after being admitted last Friday to Nashville’s Vanderbilt University Medical Center with autoimmune and kidney problems, according to TMZ. Her loved ones began travelling to Nashville after her hospitalisation was made known, though some were unable to reach her while she was alive.

Announcement From Family

In the Instagram video, Seaver said the format of the announcement was something Parton had asked him to prepare years earlier. He described her as having “lived in the light” and said she was now “in the arms of Jesus”, alongside her late husband, Carl Dean, as well as her parents and others who had already died.

Family sources said a private service for close friends and relatives would be held in Nashville within the following days.

Six-Decade Career And Signature Hits

Parton, often billed as the “Queen of Country”, built an illustrious recording and performance career spanning six decades. She was especially associated with hits including Jolene and 9 to 5, both of which helped cement her place in mainstream American music.

Her songwriting also reached beyond country audiences. 9 to 5, written and recorded for the film of the same name in 1980, later won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The track also received multiple Grammy Awards, including Country Song of the Year and Female Country Vocal of the Year.

Another of her best-known songs, I Will Always Love You, was written after Parton split with her former business partner and mentor Porter Wagoner as she moved towards a solo career. The song reached number one on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in June 1974 and again in October 1982. It later became a global hit again when Whitney Houston recorded it for the 1992 film The Bodyguard, with the soundtrack album going on to be certified 18 times platinum.

Parton also became known for control of her music rights. She previously said that Elvis Presley was not able to record his own version of I Will Always Love You after a request that she sign over half of the publishing rights, which she refused.

Health Woes And Plans To Continue

Parton’s death followed months of health problems that led her to withdraw from a run of public appearances, prompting concern among fans. In an interview published shortly before her death, she said she still had “so many things” she wanted to achieve and intended to keep working “as long as” she could. She also said she had health issues that she did not focus on while she was looking after Carl.

In September 2025, Parton told fans she would postpone her Las Vegas residency originally scheduled for December until September 2026, saying her doctors had told her she needed several procedures. In October, her sister Freida asked the public to pray for Dolly after she had been unwell, before Parton

posted a video at an Opry-related ad shoot to reassure supporters.

Early Life, Marriage And Tributes

Born on 19 January 1946 in Pittman Center, Tennessee, Parton was the fourth of 12 children raised in the Great Smoky Mountains. She recalled sleeping on straw beds and living without running water, gas or electricity. Her first single, Puppy Love, was released when she was 13, after she had begun appearing on radio and local television.

Parton met Carl Dean at a Nashville laundromat in 1964 and they married in 1966. Dean died in March 2025 after nearly 60 years of marriage.

Tributes followed from fellow musicians and celebrities, including country artists and performers, as well as public figures who wrote about her music and her support for others.

Dolly Parton was known for her exaggerated looks almost as much as her music. I like the story that:

Dolly Parton entered a Dolly Parton look-alike contest. And lost.

Dolly Parton’s passing end a brilliant career built on discipline, not drama.

She wrote her own hits, including I Will Always Love You and Jolene, and she kept a clean reputation.

People respected her consistency. No feuds, no reinventions, just steady work and a public persona that stayed warm without being shallow.

Her legacy is simple and solid one of iconic songs, professional conduct, and a career younger artists still study. Most importantly, she stayed recognisably Dolly for five decades!

RIP Dolly.

Pure class, a national treasure and beacon of humanity.

A great part of growing up for me from the 60's onwards, always respectful, funny, and talented, RIP Dolly.

She took a stance against the MAGA antivax babble at the risk of her career, and backed it up with donating to the development. She tried, in an ever-so-gentle way, to convince her audience that vaccine is the smart way to go. Biggest C&W scandal since Faith Hill cut her hair 20 years before.

Maybe I don't get to see enough ads, but I don't recall ever seeing her selling soda pop. Or brassieres.

She was one of the first women to burn their bras.

It took the fire department four days to put it out.

RIP Dolly

Always remember a family holiday driving round France when I was a kid.

Mum had discovered Dolly Parton and had a couple of cassettes of hers.

It did get old listening to Love is like a Butterfly for the 50th time but brings up some great family memories.

She has a great number of memorable and beautiful songs.

a sad day for music

The wife does karaoke with this one with her little boom box.

The photo of her with Jagger, appropriately 1977 NYC, speaks more eloquently about the stark difference between Dolly and the godless degenerates in the entertainment industry than anything I could write.

Sad to hear of her passing. She, indeed, was a legend. I've been working my way through Facebook and I've been so touched by both the sheer number of tributes that have already been posted and by how heartfelt each of them has been. She truly was loved and admired by so many--and, rightly so. As someone who worked in the library field, I especially admired her dedication to getting books into the hands of young readers--millions of them with her reading program. What an extraordinary life she led. She will be missed.

Yeah, if anyone does have any negative gossip about her now, I truly do not want to hear it.

May perpetual light shine on her soul!

She was one of the good people in any industry not exactly known for that!

Fabulous character and fabulous singer/songwriter.Her version of “I will always love you” had so much feeling and to me was the best ever version.

Her quote of “it costs a fortune to look this cheap” was typical Dolly. So self effacing and fun.

This gal had everything and more.

RIP Dolly, country music will not feel the same without you.

She was one of the most popular celebrities ever. She will be missed, she broke the mold.

She was a great entertainer and singer. College professor grew up about 10 minutes from her.

She said many people ended up having Dolly get the better of them in a business deal. She was very clever and knew how to play the game at a high level.

RIP Dolly

She was a prolific writer but maybe her single biggest hit was Islands in the Stream written by the Bee Gees and a duet with Kenny Rogers.

And yet note her thoughtful comments about Mylie Cyrus, her goddaughter, when Cyrus came under withering attack from the more conservative (small c) elements of US society.

I hate it when people criticize her.....“She'll land in the right place. I really know she has everything it takes. She is just trying to find her way and she will.

She's just trying to find her own place and wings and learn to fly.......I would never dream of calling her and saying, ‘Well why are you doing this?’ or, ‘You shouldn't do this or that’.....I know that she has thought this all through. We'll let her go and do her own thing....I've seen how smart she is and how talented she is.

Compared to the majority of recording artists (all genre), she was one of the kindest, least self-centered, generous, most outspoken when needed on behalf of the needy stars ever. Incomparable - RIP Dolly.

Not everyone shared her vision on childhood literacy

In the US, early start and elementary education provision is provided by local government using local taxes. Its no secret that there are many states, particularly in the Mid-West, with profound Adult illiteracy rates

Ms Parton's programme was initially targeted at her own county, inspired by her own upbringing, but by working with organisations across the country, including local government, she was able to get it rolled out nationally. Lawmakers cut funding, because while t

hey agreed with the aims, they thought it should be entirely privately funded. But there would be no need for it if these politicians had done the job they were elected to do. Educating tomorrow's taxpayers is a pretty essential part of a government's role, and the taxpayer is paying them to do that. No doubt, many of these politicians, on the hustings, in their leafleting, would have set out their ambitions in this area. None of them would have said "defund education, leave it to rich people where we can get away with it".

I suspect some of them resented the lady donating her money to non-American causes. Which makes the epitaphs today somewhat hypocritical.

Perhaps after her passing, there will be some reversal of those votes.
