Russia warns Britain: UK defense firms are Potential Legal Targets

Former Kremlin official warns of possible hybrid attacks as Moscow brands Britain ‘evil number one’

Russia is turning up the heat on Britain, with a former senior Kremlin official warning that Moscow is considering attacks on British interests while Russian commentators openly identify defence companies and military sites as potential targets.

Andrei Fedorov, a former Russian deputy foreign minister and adviser to Vladimir Putin, told the Mail on Sunday that the Kremlin was unlikely to launch an outright military strike against Britain because doing so could trigger a NATO response.

But he warned that a “hybrid attack” — including sabotage or arson — was a much more realistic possibility.

And his language about Britain was extraordinary.

“The UK is evil number one,” Fedorov said, claiming anger inside Russia had intensified over British-made weapons being used by Ukraine against Russian targets.

British defence firms in the crosshairs

Among the companies being discussed is Ukrspecsystems, a British-Ukrainian drone manufacturer whose premises are located close to RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk.

Another potential target is MBDA, the British-based missile manufacturer responsible for producing Storm Shadow missiles.

Fedorov said Russian experts were openly describing MBDA as a “legal target” because of its involvement in supplying weapons used by Ukraine.

The warnings come as Britain continues to provide military support to Kyiv and Prime Minister Andy Burnham has met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.

Moscow has reacted angrily to Britain's increasingly direct support for Ukraine.

Moscow prefers the grey zone

The more worrying threat may not be Russian missiles flying towards Britain.

Western officials have warned that Moscow is increasingly relying on the murky world of sabotage, arson, cyberattacks and covert operations precisely because such attacks can cause damage without automatically triggering a conventional military response.

Elisabeth Braw of the Atlantic Council described this as the “defender's dilemma” — how does a country respond militarily to an attack designed to remain below the threshold of open warfare?

That is precisely where Moscow could attempt to operate.

Britain has already experienced incidents attributed to Russian-linked operatives, including the burning of a warehouse storing aid for Ukraine and a series of arson attacks.

NATO remains the big red line

Fedorov acknowledged that a direct Russian attack on Britain would be an entirely different proposition because Britain is a NATO member.

A direct military strike could trigger the alliance's collective defence mechanisms and potentially turn a confrontation between Moscow and London into a much wider war.

That is why hybrid warfare is so attractive to the Kremlin.

The message from Moscow appears to be: we want to hurt Britain, but without giving NATO an obvious reason to go to war.

CIA chief's quiet Moscow visit

The threats are particularly interesting because they came shortly after an extraordinary and largely unannounced visit to Moscow by CIA Director John Ratcliffe.

According to the report, Ratcliffe warned Russian officials against attacking a NATO country.

That suggests Washington is taking the possibility of escalation seriously — even while diplomatic and intelligence channels remain open.

Britain's ambassador in Moscow has also warned officials against publicly confirming whether British-supplied weapons are being used inside Russia, saying such statements could unnecessarily increase the risks to UK national security.

Britain refuses to be bullied

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting rejected the Russian threats, accusing Moscow of intimidation and insisting Britain would continue supporting Ukraine.

Former security minister Tom Tugendhat was equally blunt, describing the threats as the words of a regime losing the war it started.

But the rhetoric coming from Moscow is becoming harder to dismiss as simple bluster.

A Russian military-linked channel has reportedly even called for an attack on the NATO base at Tapa in Estonia, where around 900 British troops are stationed.

That puts the issue beyond another round of angry Kremlin rhetoric.

Britain is already part of the Ukraine war's wider military support network — and Moscow is making increasingly clear that it regards parts of that network as legitimate targets.

The frightening question is not whether Russia can attack Britain. It is how far Moscow is prepared to go without crossing the line that brings NATO into the fight.

Russian and Russian proxies (usually teenagers) have for years, even before 2022, have been carrying out industrial espionage against Western companies.

2014: Attack on Vrbětice ammunition depot, Czechia, killing 2, carried out by GRU Unit 29155

2015: Assasination attempts and attacks on ammunition depots owned by Emilian Gebrev, Bulgaria, arried out by GRU Unit 29155

2016: Failed coup/assassination plot intended to disrupt Montenegro's accession to NATO.

2017: NotPetya malware attack on Western companies

2018: GRU assassination operation in Salisbury UK; the operation resulted in the death of a British citizen, and serious, life affecting injuries to two others

2024: Destruction of Starlink warehouse in UK by Russian Bulgarian proxies

2024: Attempted downing of Western cargo aircraft using incendiary devices in Germany and UK. The targets were aircraft heading to America. Possibly the plan involved detonating the aircraft over US airspace, causing a 911 style disaster, and killing Americans.

2024: Arson of Polish shopping centre, intending to cause economic losses and murder Polish citizens.

2024: Arson of Lithuanian furniture store, intending to cause economic losses and murder Lithuanian citizens

2024 (not 100% confirmed): Arson attack on French rail ahead of the Olympic opening ceremony. The timing suggests an intention was to cause a mass casualty event through derailment

2025: Attack on Warsaw-Lublin rail way line. Possible intention was to cause a mass casualty event through derailment

2026: Armed drones found at airport, Germany.

Of course Russian/Soviet attacks predate 2014. I have excluded attacks on comms hardware, since these are contentious.

The article is inaccurate, as it attempts to whitewash previous Kremlin attacks, downplaying them to a single incident, making me question the intent of the author, or the validity of the source material.

The intent is to create alarmist click bait headlines to generate income. Objective reporting is an alien concept.

Well, yeah. If your going to make weapons with the express purpose of having them launched deep into Russia - then? You ARE a Co-Belligerent, and therefore, your weapons manufacturing plants are legitimate targets. I fully expect to see World War 3 and a nuclear holocaust in my lifetime and it will be provoke by NATO members bombing Russia with their weapons.

angry "But we didn't launch them from our soil. Ukraine did it!!!"

It's not going to matter. Eventually Russia is going to say, "That freaking enough." Then? Game On! Time to take out the manufacturing plants making weapons being used to destroy Russian infrastructure regardless of where those plants are located.

For all of you war-lovers out their, what are you planning to do when NATO finally provokes World War 3 and the world takes side, in other words, Russia, China, the DPRK, Iran, and members of the Global South join in military defense pacts. Really. Where are you war mongers who viscerally hate Russians, Chinese, North Koreans, Iranians, and everyone your countries leaders tell you that you should hate? If you haven't noticed, you are a freaking stone's throw from China. Do you have a plan when SHTF? Me? I'm staying here and let the chips fall where they may. And probably will experience a nice nuclear winter in Northern Thailand.

You missed the recent Coronal Mass Ejections from the Sun - Russia did it. And the last gamma-ray burst from Alpha Centuri? Putin did it himself.

When you are facetious like that, you earn a block, no matter how much you pretend to be Buddhist. You must be Russian. Lavrov apparently is also a pretend Buddhist.

No skin off my nose if you ceased to exist (for me).

If you were being serious, then seek help for those delusions. Otherwise, you are mocking the mentally ill for your own enjoyment

When do you propose the bombing runs start on North Korea. North Korea contributes men and materiel to the conflict. So therefore you you think they are a fair target for attacks.

Don't bother to answer fake Buddhist. Sending you to Coventry. See you in Hell.
