I was one of those on R&R here in the late 60s and early 70s. We had two focuses: stay out of jail or the brig, and release as much testosterone as possible in a short period of time. Rest never made the list, and we were pretty much oblivious to everything else around us.

In HK the Mamasuns called them "cheap charlies".

(Prostitution is legal in HK...BUT running a "house of ill repute" is Not!!)

They just came and sat in the bar on 1 beer for ages, taking in the eye candy or just chatting to the girls (*who speak excellent English), but 99% never took a lady out (bar-fined) .

They wanted to take their money back home......and where would they take a girl anyway, before they had to return to the ship?

They'll surely get an orientation to the scams of Pattaya, along with the finger wag of behave yourselves. Hopefully they pay attention to the scam advisories.

The problem is not with Thailand or with sailors in Thailand. The problem is with the US of A. In the land of the free (the Land of Liberty) walking up to a woman and telling her "here's some money, let's have fun" is a serious crime.

They chose Thailand because its on the way home, been here before many times, has a port big enough for it to go along side and its a safe friendly country.

Well presumably the girls had places they could take customers? Short time hotels or the like??

I've never been in any armed service but ever since I've been visiting Pattaya, I've crossed paths with visiting Servicemen, UK and USA, and always found them to be great company just looking for fun as we guys do. No difference 'tween them and me in that respect. I've also seen the respective shore patrols keeping an eye on the boys - never actually seen any trouble. I've been told that if a group goes ashore and ONE of them gets unruly, the SP can send them ALL back to the ship. That's sort of self-regulating IMO.

Oh and slightly but on Phuket when the British Navy visited, the Phuket Hash organised runs especially for them to join. Those days were very drunken full of macho comments and mucho fun!. Still got the tee-shirt from when the RN managed to bend the Royal Yacht Britannia in Hong Kong. Just imagine the comments those boys got!

Wasn’t Pattaya’s sex industry, along with much of its economic development, shaped in the 1970s primarily to meet the needs of U.S. servicemen on R&R? And now the local authorities want to chase away the golden goose in another attempt to change the city’s public image. Of course, everyone there who makes a living from tourists coming to spend money will be grateful for the loose flow of U.S. dollars coming into the bars from those sailors, especially when much of the time it’s only tight-fisted rupees being spent there.

Most likely will have buses or vans contracted out to pick up from the pier to designated drop off areas in Pattaya on a set schedule.

Same going back to the ship.

Commuting from Laem Chabang or Sattahip is a pain in the as-. Even if contracted out.

Was so much better when the fleet anchored directly off Pattaya Beach as I experienced in 1980 while embarked on the “Gators”. Contracted long boats ferrying us back and forth directly to the beach.

Pattaya was basically Beach Road , Walking Street and some of the side soi ‘s like 13/1/2/3/4. No need to venture any farther because nothing else existed to my knowledge.

Agree. I have been in Pattaya for past visits and was pleasantly surprised at how very well behaved the ones i saw were...of course there were also MP's wandering around and i suspect they had been very well briefed on what was allowed and what was not...the only problem was that all of them called me sir everytime i said anything to them.....have fun guys, get some happy ending massages, wear a condom as needed, set the price in advance and enjoy. I would bet a lot of the thai gals will be delighted to have some YOUNG bucks rather than the usual older than dirt bunch.

Ladies from all over the country are running to Pattaya to wait for the Americans!
