Mekong flood season turns Dong Thap fields into playground

Seasonal floodwaters are drawing residents and visitors to fields in Vietnam's Dong Thap Province, where the annual floating season has turned low-lying farmland into a vast informal swimming and boating destination.

The floating season normally runs from August to November as higher water levels and flooded rivers and canals spread across parts of the Mekong Delta. In recent weeks, people have been heading to embankment areas in Thuong Phuoc Commune, Hong Ngu Ward and Thuong Lac Ward to swim, cool off and spend time in the open water.

Weekend crowds gather along an embankment of more than one kilometre, with adults swimming, young people playing and children being introduced to the water by relatives. The setting is part of a long-established riverine way of life rather than a purpose-built tourist attraction.

A seasonal attraction with local character

For many local families, the flooded fields offer a chance to enjoy the countryside as the water rises. Resident Nguyen Thanh Tuan said he had brought children and nieces and nephews to swim during the past two weeks, teaching his six-year-old son in the broad, embanked expanse.

The season also brings visitors looking for activities beyond swimming. Small and motorised boats can travel through the flooded fields, while local guides show visitors how fishing nets and traditional traps are used. Some visitors also try harvesting sesbania flowers and water lilies.

Extra income as visitors arrive

The flow of visitors is providing small business opportunities for residents. Vendors are selling drinks and snacks, while others hire out life jackets and swimming floats during busy periods. The water also carries alluvial soil, shrimp and fish from the upper Mekong River, reinforcing why residents often describe the season as a gift from nature.

Hong Ngu Ward authorities have stressed that safety must remain the priority as the activity becomes more popular. Conditions in seasonal floodwater can vary, so visitors should not assume the fields are comparable with supervised swimming pools.

For travellers and expatriates, the floating season offers an unusual way to experience the Mekong Delta and support small local businesses. Anyone joining water activities should use available flotation equipment, follow local advice and treat seasonal floodwaters with care, especially when travelling with children.
