Vietnamese taxi drivers and other service workers are being urged to keep calm, record the facts and use practical payment options when a foreign customer disputes or refuses a bill.

Recent cases draw attention

The advice follows a case in Da Nang involving an Indian tourist who reportedly told a taxi driver that he had no money at the end of a journey. The incident led to discussion in both Vietnam and India about unpaid fares and how visitors should behave when using services abroad.

Tuoi Tre News said other videos shared online appeared to show foreign visitors refusing payment after using services, sometimes citing language difficulties. In one reported case, two tourists filled their motorbikes at a petrol station and then declined to pay; a Vietnamese customer later settled the bill after a prolonged confrontation.

Keep the situation controlled

Le Hanh Phuc, a ride-hailing driver in Da Nang, said many drivers decide not to report small losses because the process can take time and prevent them from earning on another trip. Former taxi-company manager Le Viet Trai said workers should first establish what has happened rather than react in anger.

Translation apps can help explain the fare and ask whether a passenger has a bank card, can make a transfer or can use another electronic payment method. If a customer appears genuinely stranded, a driver may choose to contact a hotel, relative or travel company, but Trai said this is different from paying the bill personally.

When to call for help

Where payment is still refused, service workers should keep a record of the fare, time, location and any available passenger details, then contact their company or the authorities if needed. The report specifically advises against threats, swearing, force, or withholding a passenger's passport or luggage.

Vietnam is receiving growing numbers of international visitors, and the article notes that cultural and language differences can complicate small disputes. Clear communication and an agreed payment method before a service begins can help prevent them.

What it means for foreigners in Vietnam

Visitors should make sure they can pay before using taxis, ride-hailing services, petrol stations or other local businesses, particularly outside major tourist centres. Carrying a working payment method, confirming the fare and using a translation app when necessary can avoid a minor problem becoming a stressful confrontation. If funds are genuinely unavailable, asking a hotel, travel provider or trusted contact for help is safer than simply refusing to pay.
