Blocked trails delay hikers’ return from Gunung Gerah

Six hikers who were reported missing after a Trans Gerah Expedition in northern Malaysia have safely returned after blocked, little-used trails slowed their journey out of the forest.

The group began the trek at Gunung Gerah on August 29 but did not emerge by their planned September 3 exit date, prompting relatives to lodge a police report.

Trails closed by long disuse

Perak Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Sayani Saidon said the group encountered closed and obstructed routes around Gunung Beratoh and Gunung Sepat.

Fallen trees and trails that had not been used by hikers for a long time forced the party to take longer than expected to make its way through the area.

The group included a couple, their two children, and two mountain guides. Their delayed return raised concern after contact could not be established from the remote hiking area.

Signal restored at Bukit Bongok

Poor mobile coverage added to the uncertainty during the trek. The hikers were eventually able to obtain a phone signal at Bukit Bongok, allowing them to contact their families and helping rescuers establish their location.

They were found safe on Monday night and received medical checks at Pos Kemar Health Clinic. On Tuesday morning, the six left Pos Kemar by boat via Jeti Trojan at Tasik Banding.

The incident highlights the difficulty of navigating older mountain routes where conditions can change quickly and reliable communication is limited.

Foreign visitors planning hikes in Malaysia should use recognised routes, check current trail conditions with local authorities or guides, and ensure somebody has a clear itinerary and expected return time. In remote areas, do not rely on mobile coverage alone, and carry suitable navigation, emergency and communications equipment.
