Thailand Approves Plan to Recruit 10,000 Sri Lankan Workers

Thailand’s Cabinet has approved two labour agreements with Sri Lanka aimed at initially bringing 10,000 Sri Lankan workers into the country to address shortages in several industries. The framework will regulate the entire recruitment process, covering worker selection, employment contracts, health checks, legal entry, employment and eventual return to Sri Lanka. Employment contracts will initially last two years and can be extended for an additional two years, with employers responsible for repatriation costs when workers complete their agreed terms. Workers will be entitled to protections under Thai labour law but must obtain proper work permits, carry health insurance and work only for their authorised employer and occupation. Officials say the programme is intended not only to fill labour gaps but also to establish a more transparent recruitment system and reduce illegal hiring and human trafficking.
