Vietnam deports 10 foreigners over visa violations

Vietnam has deported six South Korean and four Chinese nationals after authorities found they had breached residence and visa rules.

The cases underline that Vietnam’s immigration requirements apply to all foreign visitors and residents, including people who arrive legally but later fail to maintain the correct visa, residence or work status.

The authorities did not link the action to nationality. The deportations concerned individual immigration violations and were carried out under Vietnam’s rules governing foreign entry, residence and exit.

Residence rules are actively enforced

Foreign nationals in Vietnam must ensure their visa and temporary-residence status remain valid for the purpose and duration of their stay.

This includes tourists, business visitors, employees, students and long-term residents. A visa that was valid on arrival may not cover later changes in work, residence or travel plans.

Accommodation providers also have responsibilities to register a foreign guest’s temporary residence with local authorities. Foreigners renting private homes or apartments should make sure their landlord or agent has completed that process correctly.

Deportation is not an automatic outcome

Vietnam can impose administrative penalties for immigration breaches. The outcome depends on the type, seriousness and circumstances of each case.

Deportation may be considered alongside a fine or other measures where authorities find the violation warrants it. A removal decision can also affect a person’s ability to return to Vietnam in the future.

The safest response to a visa or residence problem is to address it promptly through the relevant immigration office rather than attempt to leave the country without resolving it.

Check documents before travel or work

Visitors should check the expiry date and permitted purpose of their visa before travel, while residents should keep passports, visas, temporary-residence cards and local registration details up to date.

Those planning to work, change employer, study or stay longer than originally intended should confirm whether fresh approval, an extension or a different immigration status is needed.

Travel agents, employers and landlords can help with paperwork, but the individual foreigner remains responsible for ensuring their status is lawful.

What it means for foreigners in Vietnam

Keep a clear record of your visa expiry date, temporary-residence registration and any work authorisation. If a document has expired or your circumstances have changed, contact Vietnam’s immigration authorities promptly. Do not assume an old visa, a landlord’s assurance or a previous entry arrangement automatically covers your current stay.
