Haze leaves 14 Malaysian areas with unhealthy air

Haze has pushed air quality to unhealthy levels in 14 areas across Malaysia, with Sarawak accounting for 11 of the affected locations.

Sarawak remains the worst hit

The latest Air Pollutant Index readings show the country’s haze problem remains concentrated in East Malaysia. Sarawak has repeatedly recorded the highest number of unhealthy readings during the current episode, affecting major population centres as well as smaller districts.

An API reading from 101 to 200 is classed as unhealthy. Conditions can be particularly difficult for children, older people and anyone with respiratory or heart conditions.

A persistent regional problem

Haze is a recurring cross-border issue in Southeast Asia, commonly linked to smoke from forest and peat fires. Dry weather can allow the pollution to spread and remain trapped over affected areas for extended periods.

Malaysia’s environment authorities continue to monitor readings through the Air Pollutant Index Management System, while the wider situation can change quickly with weather conditions.

Health precautions urged

People in affected locations are advised to reduce prolonged outdoor activity where possible. Those who need to be outside should consider suitable masks when air quality worsens, while schools and employers are expected to follow official advice where readings rise further.

Residents with asthma or other breathing difficulties should keep medication available and seek medical advice if symptoms become worse.
