Anwar brings Malaysia’s voice to BRICS summit

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has arrived in New Delhi for the BRICS Leaders’ Summit, saying Malaysia will use the gathering to advance its diplomatic and economic interests.

A light-hearted arrival message

Anwar drew attention online after referring to himself as “Guru” in a Facebook post following his arrival in India. He said he hoped Malaysians would see how the government’s MADANI Diplomacy approach is put into practice on the global stage.

Behind the informal post is a serious diplomatic programme centred on trade, investment and Malaysia’s role as a BRICS partner country.

Meetings with major leaders

The Prime Minister is due to hold bilateral meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders from Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan and Ethiopia during the visit.

Malaysia has held BRICS partner-country status since January 2025. The summit gives Putrajaya an opportunity to engage with major emerging economies without becoming a full member of the bloc.

Focus on growth and cooperation

India is hosting the 18th summit under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”. Discussions are expected to cover economic cooperation, trade, investment reform and wider global governance issues.

Anwar is scheduled to deliver Malaysia’s national statement during the summit’s opening session.

What it means for foreigners in Malaysia

The immediate effect for daily life in Malaysia will be limited. The longer-term value lies in whether the meetings generate new trade, investment, technology and tourism links that benefit the Malaysian economy and create opportunities for foreign businesses operating in the country.
