Myanmar’s military-backed government has escalated its campaign against the country’s UN representative, Kyaw Moe Tun, declaring his status revoked and accusing him of “illegal activities”.

The announcement, carried by state media on Sunday, marks the latest attempt by the junta to dislodge the diplomat, who has remained in post since the 2021 coup despite being dismissed from the civil service. Kyaw Moe Tun was appointed under Aung San Suu Kyi’s civilian government and famously appealed to the UN not to recognise the military takeover just days after it seized power.

Since then, his position has been protected by the UN Credentials Committee, which has repeatedly deferred a decision on Myanmar’s representation. That committee is expected to meet after the UN General Assembly later this month, where the issue could resurface.

Pro-democracy groups and the parallel National Unity Government have rallied behind Kyaw Moe Tun, lobbying to ensure he remains Myanmar’s voice at the UN. For the junta, however, his continued presence is a source of frustration. Officials accuse him of misusing state property and funds while working with the opposition, and say they are pursuing legal action through INTERPOL and US agencies.

The move underscores the deep divide between Myanmar’s military rulers and the international community. While the generals insist he no longer represents the country, many governments continue to engage with him as the legitimate envoy.

Observers note that the timing is significant, coming ahead of the General Assembly in New York. The outcome of the Credentials Committee’s deliberations could determine whether Myanmar’s seat remains with Kyaw Moe Tun or shifts to a representative chosen by the junta.

For now, the ambassador remains in place, continuing to speak out against the military regime. His fate, however, hangs on a decision that could reshape Myanmar’s diplomatic standing at the UN and further expose the country’s political turmoil.
