Tropical depression brings heavy rain to central Vietnam

A tropical depression has moved ashore along Vietnam’s north-central coast, bringing widespread heavy rain and raising the risk of flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.

System moves inland

The depression made landfall near the coastal area between Hà Tĩnh and northern Quảng Trị before moving west-northwest towards central Laos.

Forecasters said sustained winds near the centre were between 39 and 74 kilometres per hour. The system is expected to weaken into a low-pressure area as it continues inland.

Rainfall remains the main danger

Although the depression is not especially strong, its wide rain band is expected to affect a large area of northern and central Vietnam.

Provinces from Thanh Hóa to Quảng Trị could receive 100 to 200 millimetres of rain, with some places seeing more than 350 millimetres. Rain is expected to continue through the night and into the following days.

Flood and landslide warnings

Authorities have warned of urban flooding, flash floods on small rivers and streams, and landslides on mountain slopes. River levels could rise rapidly, especially where ground is already saturated after recent rain.

People in low-lying, riverside and mountainous areas have been urged to monitor official warnings and avoid unnecessary travel during intense downpours.

Foreign residents and visitors in central and north-central Vietnam should expect travel disruption and localised flooding. Check road conditions before travelling, avoid mountain routes during heavy rain, and do not attempt to cross flooded roads or streams.
