US body accredits hospitals tied to Myanmar junta

Two Yangon hospitals linked to Myanmar regime leader Min Aung Hlaing and his family have received international accreditation from a US‑based organisation, sparking controversy over the intersection of healthcare standards and military patronage.

The American Accreditation Commission International (AACI) announced that Kan Thar Yar International Specialist Hospital had been awarded International Hospital Accreditation and a Clinical Excellence Certificate for Endoscopy Services, calling it “the first of its kind in Myanmar”.

Moe Kaung Treasure Maternal and Child Hospital received similar recognition for maternity services. Both were accredited in August.

AACI hailed the awards as “historic milestones” for Myanmar’s healthcare sector. Yet both hospitals have deep ties to the military establishment. Kan Thar Yar was opened by Min Aung Hlaing in 2017 and is registered under the military‑owned Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC), which has been sanctioned by the US Treasury. Moe Kaung Treasure was launched in May 2021, just months after the coup, and is owned by Min Aung Hlaing’s family. It was built by Sky One Construction, controlled by his son Aung Pyae Sone, also sanctioned in 2021.

The hospitals promoted their new credentials through advertisements in Thailand’s Bangkok Post, declaring: “You no longer need to look abroad for international‑grade medical care.”

AACI’s accreditation process involves on‑site assessments of compliance with standards and regulatory requirements. However, it remains unclear whether ownership structures or sanctions exposure were considered.

The National Unity Government, Myanmar’s shadow administration, has previously urged boycotts of businesses linked to Min Aung Hlaing and his family, including both hospitals. Critics argue that international recognition risks legitimising institutions tied to a regime accused of widespread human rights abuses.

For Min Aung Hlaing, the accreditation offers a veneer of international credibility. For opponents, it underscores how global institutions can inadvertently bolster the image of a military elite whose business empire spans hospitals, construction, hotels, telecoms and more.
