Vietnam welcomes Thai King and Queen on historic state visit

Vietnam’s top leader To Lam and his spouse hosted an official welcome ceremony in Hanoi on Tuesday for Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida, marking a historic first state visit by a Thai monarch since the two countries established diplomatic relations 50 years ago.

The three-day visit, running from September 14 to 16, comes at the invitation of To Lam, who is both General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and State President. The royal couple arrived in Hanoi on Monday to begin a programme expected to underline the growing political, economic and cultural relationship between the two ASEAN neighbours.

The welcome ceremony was held at the National Assembly House in Hanoi. It reflected the high level of protocol reserved for a state visit and set the stage for formal talks and other scheduled engagements during the royal visit.

A landmark visit for both countries

This is the first state visit to Vietnam by a reigning Thai King and Queen since diplomatic relations began in 1976. It also coincides with the 50th anniversary of formal Vietnam-Thailand ties, giving the visit particular symbolic importance.

Relations between the two countries have intensified through a series of senior-level exchanges this year. To Lam visited Thailand in May, while Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul made an official visit to Vietnam in June.

Trade and investment links deepen

Thailand remains one of Vietnam’s major regional economic partners. Two-way trade surpassed US$15 billion in the first seven months of 2026, according to Vietnamese government figures.

Thai businesses also have a substantial presence in Vietnam, with hundreds of active investment projects across sectors including manufacturing, retail, food, energy and services. The visit is expected to reinforce the wider strategic partnership as both countries seek stronger regional connectivity and economic cooperation.
