Rising food costs tighten budgets in Ho Chi Minh City

Households in Ho Chi Minh City are feeling the strain of steadily rising food prices, with shoppers reporting higher costs for vegetables, meat, fish and everyday meals both at home and outside.

Small increases on individual items are adding up for regular market shoppers. One resident said a meal for two people that previously cost VND70,000 to VND80,000 to prepare now requires around VND100,000 worth of ingredients.

Bananas have risen from about VND13,000 to VND15,000 per kilogram, while some vegetables have increased by around VND5,000 per kilogram. Prices for mustard greens have risen by an estimated five to 10 per cent.

Eating out becomes more expensive

The effect is also being felt at local eateries. A bowl of pho that previously sold for around VND35,000 at one small restaurant has risen to VND50,000, while a plate of steamed rice rolls has increased from VND25,000 to VND30,000.

Many consumers are responding by looking for discounts, buying only essentials and cooking more meals at home. For some, even a basic breakfast of coffee and noodles has become a significant daily expense.

Food vendors say prices can change quickly. Fresh herbs such as coriander have at times risen by VND6,000 to VND10,000 per kilogram within just a day or two.

Weather and transport costs add pressure

Vegetables from Da Lat have seen some of the sharpest increases. Carrots and potatoes have risen from VND35,000 to VND50,000 per kilogram, while tomatoes have climbed from VND20,000 to VND30,000.

Suppliers say rainy weather has cut output in Lam Dong Province by an estimated 30 to 35 per cent. Leafy vegetables are particularly vulnerable to heavy rain and flooding.

Retailers also point to higher freight and shipping costs. Imported products have already seen several price rises this year, while further increases of five to seven per cent are possible in the coming months.

What it means for foreigners in Vietnam

Foreign residents should expect everyday food spending in Ho Chi Minh City to remain higher than earlier in the year. Wet markets may offer better value on some local produce, while supermarkets can be useful for promotions and more predictable pricing.
