New MyKad Rolls Out With Stronger Security and More Durable Design

Malaysia has begun issuing a new-generation MyKad with 53 security features, more than double the 23 features on the previous version, as authorities introduce the country's seventh-generation identity card.

The new cards became available on September 17, with early recipients in Putrajaya describing the replacement process as quick and straightforward. Some also commented on the card's sturdier construction and updated appearance.

The National Registration Department (NRD) is introducing the new cards in phases. Existing MyKad holders do not need to replace their cards immediately, as the current version remains valid for everyday transactions.

New security features added

The updated MyKad includes several new security technologies designed to make the card harder to tamper with or misuse.

Features include a Dynamic Security Hologram and transparent window on the front, while the rear carries an Enforcement QR Code and a Dual-Interface Chip. The QR code is intended for use by enforcement agencies and cannot be read using an ordinary phone camera.

The NRD says the number of security features has increased from 23 on the previous card to 53 on the new version.

Replacement will take place in phases

Applications are now available at 40 NRD branches with on-site printing facilities, where eligible applicants can receive their new card on the same day.

Branches without printing facilities can also accept applications, with cards expected to be ready within five working days.

NRD officials have advised people not to rush to replace existing cards simply to obtain the new version. The department reported that more than 300 people had registered for replacement at its Putrajaya branch on the first morning, compared with around 100 on a normal day.

What it means for foreigners in Malaysia

The new MyKad is for Malaysian citizens, so foreign residents do not need to replace their passports or immigration documents as part of this rollout.

Foreigners dealing with Malaysian government agencies, banks or other services should continue using the identification documents applicable to their own immigration status. The new MyKad rollout does not change the validity of those documents.
