Ghost / Haunted Houses In Bangkok

The wife loves Ghost stories.

She has also told me a few tales over the years, not all of which I believe entirely :D

Anyway, she has mentioned that their are places in Bangkok that folk can go at nightime and "experiance" spooky stuff...........I am not entirely comfortable with this sort of stuff, even though I have met a couple of ghosts and still do not beleive in them :o ......so we have never got around to planning any visits.

Indeed I am not entirely sure these places exist in Bangkok. and I am not sure she knows either!

Anyone know something or suggest somewhere that would appeal to a Thai woman who likes spooky / supernatural stuff? (a Voodoo ceremony would be an acceptable compromise :D )

You have seen ghosts but don't believe in them ??? Stay of that damned Lao Kao my man :D

Seriously I can't help you with your request in Thailand but recently myself and some friends visited a (supposedly) haunted abandoned victorian mental asylum in Scotland.

I was a non-believer and all that but we did hear 6 or 7 steady bangs come from within the walls somewhere. Spooky shi*t ! :D

I will be uploading the clip to youtube, but if you are in Thailand I suppose that won't be of any use to you eh ?

there are some 350 unfinished skyscrapers in bangkok (after the thai tiger died some 10 years ago) - with the large pools of water they are the breeding ground for mosquitos, mice and rats. Surely many thai believe they are abandoned because monks messed up their mumbo jumbo or the well was filled up. Take there your wife - on top of some spiritual experience she will have some architecture lesson

If your wife referred to a certain place: find out where one or more violent deaths have occurred (including suicides). Then check which of those house are empty. 90% chance they are considered haunted.

But could it be your wife was not referring to a place, but a ritual? You know like the Phi Thiem ceremony? One really can experience strange things there....

I'm up for visiting any supposed haunted places in Thailand and having a look. I've visited several in the UK (including Pluckley village) with a camera but so far seen/captured nothing.

In Manila there is an abandoned 1960s concrete hall not far from the harbour which is very well known as being violently haunted. The structure was built with the supervision of Estrada and due to huge corruption, poor quality materials were used. The structure collapsed killing over 100 workmen and women, and trapping others with no escape. They attempted to rebuild it but several other accidents happened, and once the shell was complete many Filipinos proclaimed ghosts inhabited it. It was never used. My Filipino friend, intelligent chap, doctor, educated abroad, took me there due to my interest but just would not climb up the steps to get close to the windows. The taxi driver thought I was mad. At the top of the steps was a security guard who look bewildered but wouldn't let me get to the top of the steps and take a peep inside. Shame.

I will concede that I was not entirely sober both times :o

Anyway, Spooky stuff is not my cup of tea - but I do know many folk really get off on being scared :D .........I am kinda surprised at the comment about no Thai woman would go to a haunted house - not to say I actually know different - just that IME Thais do have a thing about ghosts or at least a more general acceptance that they do exist. But of course this could be one more thing I have the wrong end of the stick on!

On a related issue, the Missus swears blind that their is a house in Bangkok that is occupied by 2 corpses (of a Rich Thai couple) that is kept in working order exactly as if they were alive - the bodies lie in open coffins and a maid / house keeper has to bring them food each day (as well as clean the house!).........apparently quite a high turnover of staff :D ............I must admit that I am sceptical (to say the least!) - but it never seemed fair to call the Missus on this :bah:

Maybe a business opportunity for opening a Haunted House (with a bit of special effects help?!) or a House of Horrors / Museum........I am pretty sure that many Japanese do like this stuff as well as a fair few Farang...........

Valentine's Day, Christmas. No reason not to have Halloween transplanted as well. It's common in the US to set up temporary haunted houses during the weeks leading to Halloween. Great date places for teenagers since the girls tend to cling to their dates.

Since they are clearly fake haunted houses, they might be acceptable to Thais, particularly the younger generation. Also since it's temporary, startup costs would be minimal.

Forgot, I have some "ghost pictures" from Thailand. My friend's sister took these at the same time I was taking pictures standing up and higher up on the hill. She had crouched way down close to the water. Oddly enough these "ghosts" only appeared on her pictures and not mine. Also oddly, they only appeared in flash pictures. Hmmm...

These are cropped. The waterfall continues a lot farther down to almost where she shot from. Couldn't convince them that it was just water droplets being lit up by the flash. She had some amulet that she said it looked like.

I am a scientists and do not believe in ghosts or any other spirits, demons, etc. BUT, Thais certainly do.........and each time my Thai lover and I pass that statue that sits out front of the parliament building in Bangkok (right by the zoo), she tells me about a ghost that lives there. Apparently it is common knowledge among Thais. :o:D :D :D

I had a g/f from Pluckley, Kent - the "most haunted village in England". Small world, eh? She used to work as a nanny for a Southern TV newscaster, 37 years ago.

I dunno if Halloween is big in Thailand, but certainly not unknown in BKK. Never heard of a temporary haunted house before!

When you say "Since they are clearly fake haunted houses, they might be acceptable to Thais" - is this for any legal reasons? (and / or not very budhist?) or just more culturally acceptable or just likely to attract more punters by widening the appeal factor?

I was thinking in terms of cultural views on ghosts. Have not ever discussed it with a Thai, but previously people on Thaivisa have made comments that used furniture does not sell since people are afraid of them containing ghosts.

Typical Halloween haunted house is just a winding maze through a room, or freestanding. You leave it dark and have cobwebs, spiders, some scary displays, etc. Then you hire people wearing costumes (mummy, werewolf, dracula, etc.) to jump out from around corners or out of a dark spot to scare people walking through. I think it wouldn't be necessary to have that much excitement, just having scary characters in the maze and not jumping out would be fine. Can't imagine a real haunted house having enough visitors to be viable, but a cheap, short term entertainment venue might work. Throw it near Ratchada soi 4, RCA, Patpong, Nana, and maybe you have something.

Haunted houses everywhere in Thailand. Ghosts at the temples., too. Just ask the monks; they go out and pray at places to dispel the lingering spirits. That's why you never cry at funerals -- the spirit stays to comfort you instead of going to the next realm.
