Thai rocker Nene plans school return after AGT win

Featured Replies

Thai teenage rocker Nene Royal returned briefly to Bangkok on September 30, days after winning the 2026 edition of America's Got Talent and its $1 million prize.

The 16-year-old singer and guitarist, whose real name is Rattikarn Amloy, said her plans now include writing original music, touring and returning to education.

"My plan is... writing my own songs, you know, and also making some tours, and also go back to school," she told AFP after performing at a Yamaha music showroom in Bangkok.

A win followed by a Bangkok return

Nene, who comes from Phuket, won the US television competition on September 23 after impressing judges and viewers with guitar solos and rock vocals.

She said she was "shocked" when her name was announced as champion and fainted, falling to the stage floor.

Her performances of alternative-rock standards including The Cranberries' Zombie and Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun went viral in Thailand and elsewhere during the programme.

Backing from Ozone Band

At the Bangkok event, Nene performed Zombie and Black Hole Sun with Ozone Band, her regular backing group of three teenage musicians on bass guitar, keyboard and drums.

"I really missed them, because they're kind of like my brothers," she said after the show.

The band members travelled to California while she was filming America's Got Talent to support her. "They're always supporting me," Nene said.

She also performed with Linkin Park during the final episode of America's Got Talent.

From online lessons to a national profile

Nene said she began playing guitar aged seven and learned largely by watching videos online. Her musical ability later earned her a scholarship to a private international school.

She has become a national figure in Thailand since entering the US competition, and said she had not anticipated the scale of her reception after returning home.

"When I went back to Thailand, everyone went crazy," she said.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, congratulated her on the win and praised her talent and dedication, saying it "brought pride to Thai people".

''Back to school'' 5555

That's exactly what Alizée said after she won some similar do in France some 20 odd years ago. I saw her interviewed recently. She said she'd wanted to, but then this offer came, then the next ... and school went by the wayside ... of course it did!

Now in her 40s (and still delicious and still much loved with a huge following) she tours and runs her own dance school with her husband (lucky bugger).

Up to her but it seems to me she's in a classic strike when the iron is hot situation.
