The Mummified Monk - Koh Samui

Featured Replies

The Mummified Monk

Location: Koh Samui, Thailand

What's Cool: This mummy is the only one on the list wearing sunglasses!

Visitors to Wat Khunaram on the island of Koh Samui in Thailand will first be awe-struck by the beautiful, vibrant temple in which the mummified monk, Loung Pordaeng, is displayed. Equally remarkable is the condition of the mummy that resides within. Loung Pordaeng died more than 20 years ago, but his body shows very little signs of decay. Sitting cross-legged, in a traditional meditation pose, and sporting a nice pair of shades, Loung Pordaeng has become the most famous mummy on the island.

While honey-mooning 4 years ago we paid respect to this monk. Have you been there? What was your impression of the temple and the mummy shrine? I can't remember the whole story, but my wife was deeply moved by the whole thing.

[The sunglasses may look cool :o , but there is a practical reason the caretakers have put them on the face of the mummy monk]

There are actually two mummified monks on Ko Samui, if you drive towards Nathon, turn left at the intersection with the police booth. After approx. five kilometres there's a huge wat on the left side of the road. Check it out!
