Protestors At Airport Plan To Crash Plane With Balloon?

a thai friend was trying to explain a story to me. people who own property close to the airport are mad about the noise. they want flights to stop between 9 pm and 5 am and they said that they are going to let a bunch of balloons into the air to crash or prevent planes from taking off if the airport officals do not give into their demands? anyone know anything about this?

This is too funny! I have a commercial pilots licence and when testing jet engines they injest a ton of frozen chickens into them to make sure they will still work if encountering a huge flock of geese while taking off in Canada etc etc.

Now either you will listen to my protest( no judgement here) or I will release my baloons???

could be serious even with just one helium filled metallic balloon..... :o

I agree with you 100%.

I'd hate to think of the headlines if the protestors caused an accident.

IMO it would have a very bad affect on tourism.

BS. It is a threat to an aircraft and yes I know how they test engines. Here is a link to an incident in Manchester, UK Thomson fly when a bird (Maybe about balloon size??) hit the no.2 engine. Heres the video:

Its a threat and these a*sholes should be locked up for a long time for trying this stunt. Makes the crews day a lot harder......

Beautiful job by those guys tho.

It wouldn't be an accident. It would be murder.

Frstly a single bird has never and will never bring down a jet liner. If your unlucky enough to hit a very very large bird for example a goose or a condor while piloting a cessna 152 two seater training aircraft and the bird hits you in the head.....

Now lets stick to the posting. Their not threatening to release geese or even a canary but BALLOONS

And even a helium metalic balloon wont do the trick. They have these things at parties with smokers 6 inches away and unless Im wrong no one blown up yet.

Your a muppet. heres the scenario a medium bird (NOT your GOOSE or your CONDOR) such as in the link hit no.2 engine resulting in and engine failure and an in flight shutdown as demonstrated in the video. The aircraft is heavy and lets say for example it was departing runway 06L at Manchester such is this case. Now you being a commercial pilot (Correct..) you will understand that certain runways (Man 06L perfect example) has high terrain which requires an emergencyturn procedure which at MAN is straight ahead until 4d turn left 270 intercept inbound to WAL VOR (Been a while since i was there but i recall that is roughly correct).

Now lets say the crew on the day were not on the ball forgot the emergency turn to avoid terrain and resultant accident getting distracted with the Procedures and Handling of the airplane at that critical point of the flight. Or a fire broke out in the aircraft due to the engine loss from the BALLOON / BIRD - it can bring down an aeroplane mate.

Oh and have u seen the size of some commercial balloons that are available to the public if they know where. Weather balloons for example - I have hit one of those before and it resulted in a diversion due to airframe damage.

At the end of the day it is a threat and secondly u dont give the impression of being a commercial pilot simply through what you are stating and any professional pilot worth their salt would certainly agree with me it can be a threat.

Heres the long version -

not many jet turbine's with a zillion gallons of aviation grade fuel at those parties tho.... :o

A muppet? no wonder some of these threads deteriate into mumbo jumbo. Read the posting man and please understand its not about birds. Take your personel stuff out of here and you can start the "Im a better pilot than you " thread elsewhere

Im a better pilot than you
.

I said that?

Anyway Bird/Balloon/Several Balloons/Stone/Stick/Ice - Can all have the same effect dude.

If you dont see this attempt by the protesters with balloons as a threat to an aircraft - quite frankly mate you shouldnt be holding a commercial pilot licence and I find it somewhat disturbing if your claims are correct.

Erm.... I think you'll find that Helium is one of the inert Nobel gasses and therefore not at all explosive

which is why helium filled baloons don't explode at parties! The worst it would do is make the captain sound like Micky Mouse!

A Bird/Stone/Stick/Ice would have the same impact as a balloon? Picture this, a roaring 10 ton jet engine injests a balloon or several. The aircraft inverts and plunges to earth and everyone dies. The cops investigate and charge 6 children at a birthday party. Maybe the taliban can give its victims a choice? stoned or ballooned to death. ice and sticks would be nasty but death by a bird sounds pretty good :o I for one will be checking for any birthday parties in the vicinity of my next Thai airlines flight....Thanks for the humour

What were u saying about threads degenerating into mumbo jumbo.

Can I replace my initial allegation of u being a Muppet to W*nker? - seems more fitting now.

Cheers, Happy Birthday party.

This "threat" has more to do with just that -- a threat-- than anything else. Of course, no one believes that a balloon (and incidently, they are usually filled with hydrogen because helium is too expensive) would bring down an airliner.

It has to do with a couple of factors--one being that the relevant authorities can't keep nuisances such as this from happening at an international airport. What are the implications for keeping us safe from terrorism?

Secondly, EVERY effort needs to be made to not allow anything that would distract the pilots, the ground crew or anyone else involved in aviation. It's another factor that could make the take offs and landings potentially dangerous--so why let it happen.

It's really better for everyone if no one is allowed to mess around with commercial aviation.

A ######? I have been nothing but curtious to you and have reframed from any personal abuse or insult. I am entitled to put my view accross as are you without being abused. re read your last posting and if your over 16 you should be ashamed.

100 percent correct. my comments were purely technical and in no way endorses their actions.

it is not intended as an act of violence nor is it expected or hoped the balloons will bring down planes. it is likely the balloons will not be released at all.

the threat to release of balloons is an act of civil disobedience in the hopes that the airport authority will make good on its responsibilities to the community its lack of foresight has essentially destroyed.

many promises of compensation and soundproofing have been made and then ignored. the residents are fighting for their rights by hitting the authorities where they live.

good for them for not accepting the govts typical delaying tactics
