If I get over the hurdle of ner not having a reason to return to Thailand, I understand that there is this clause of not needing to rely on public funds. However, after what time period are you allowed to seek recourse to the state coffers ?

I mean if I were to go back, I have no job or business in the UK now. If I use my money to start a business and it goes bust and I have nothing left, can I "sign on", get benefits and claim for my wife and child ?

I don't have any intention to do so but I want to know beforehand what the situation is. I know if I went back myself they would have to give me something but what is the situation with my wife and child ?

You can claim benefits at any time providing that you otherwise qualify for them, but you can't claim any additional element in respect of your wife. Once your wife has indefinite leave to remain, she may either receive benefits in her own right or you may claim any additional element.

Once you arrive in the UK, your wife will not be able to claim child benefit in respect of your child, but you may claim instead.

Scouse.

You mght be interested in looking at http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/JCP/Custom...ance/index.html

where I think you might get a shock! The upper level of payment is based on National Insurance contributions, if you do not qualify you go on what is called Income Based allowance which for a couple is £92 a week! Take into account the cost of living and you will realise why there are so many ex pats here! (petrol £5 a gallon, cigs the same etc etc)

Thanks for that. AmI reading it right though that technically I could do the following:

Show enough cash to get her the visa over. The next day go to the betting shop and blow the lot. Sign on and get whatever benefits I was entitled to for me and my child but I could not claim for my wife as her visa was only granted because we said she would not have to seek financial assiatance from the state ?

What would happen to her visa status if that happened ?

Basically, I don't see why I shouldn't get the country to give me a few quid a week even though I don't live there anymore if I can claim it. I mean, stay i n my mate's house (officially) and claim rent allowance, get some dole money, child benefit, one parent support (must be one parent if she doesn't count), any other stuff. Why not get Bt10,000 to Bt20,000 per week from the government ?

Don't get me wrong, I couldn't live on those amounts in the Uk but before I get a job or start a business it seems financially prudent to claim all you can don't you think. I mean, everyone else from the ghettos of Europe is claiming and they were not even born there.

And I wonder why I lose 40% of my UK wages to tax and NI every month!!!

..Your comments make me sick.

Why don't you think along the lines of getting a job and supporting your wife and child and making a good life for them in the UK.

..It's not that hard!

Why don't you get your wife a full time job, off the books so it doesn't effect your benefit claims. Then get your child a free place at nursery. This would allow you to have a nice lie in each morning then pop down the bookys before heading to your local for 12ish. If your wife could get some over-time and your nursery has an after hours club you could stay there till tea time. Same the next day.

Well if you only lose 40% of your salary in taxes and NI each month I won't give you a heart attack by telling you what I used to pay in taxes to the thieving robbing government you have in charge over there.

Do you honestly think a family can live in London on the mere pittance the state gives you ? Don't be silly. That said, you would have to be some sort of idiot not to claim what you were entitled to whilst looking for a job.

I don't want to live in the UK but I am investigating a number of things which would require my time over there for some extended periods and if I was offered a contract in my old field then I may take it. I would not be giving Robber Brown 11% NI and 40% tax though ! (after the measly allowances). Getting some of my historic taxes back via benefits would be a nice pocket money top up and some weekend beer money.

Personally you should stop bleating at people like me and get your own house in order. Stop the rot at home, kick out the scroungers from those pauper states the same way we had to worrry about Spain, greece, Portugal etc. all those years ago (countries with no money and lazy people). I've already paid more taxes than your average Joe will in his entire life so I've done my bit.

Now if anyone has an answer to the original question I'd be more than obliged.
