Shipping Personal Goods To Thailand!

Hey guys, hope you are all well.

Just wondered if anyone can help me understand a little more about duty costings when our item's hit the port in Thailand.

We will be moving back from the UK within the next 6 months or so & I'm trying so hard to get my head around conflicting information.

Can anyone tell me firstly if we will be charged duty and tax on personal items that will be entering the country via BKK port?

so far i've had a "yes a bloody fortune", a "no not a penny" and "it depends on what mood the manager is in or if he thinks you have any money"!!

Forgive my stupidity but I have heard some horror stories of late..... £100.00 bicycle...£600.00 duty???????.....surly not?

We will be shipping aprox 15 - 20 boxes by sea, costing around the £500.00 mark, just dont want a :o huge unexpected bill on top of this....

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance & all the best,

Mike

Mike i take it you will be using a clearing agent here ? you will get the truth ( if it exists ! ) from them, i know the taxes are less if sent by sea, also are you on a settlement visa ? if you are stress that to the agent, if not it is likely to be more,if you have ( and i would have ) sent it all in the wifes name you will pay less,.the dealings i have had personally with customs may not relate to your personal import taxes,. for instance i imported a motorbike by air, value 1000 pounds, taxes 1750 pounds !, i never did find out how they arrived at that figure,.but they tax on transpotation ,air freight is expensive, by boat a lot cheaper,.make sure you list the goods as thai nationals returning effects, ( if possible )get your wife to take control of it, ,good luck

We have just had two shipments from the UK and our full container cost approx £350 in customs duty, our part container was a lot less. However it really does seem to depend on the Customs department, some things such as bicycles do seem to attrack a higher duty when imported as do electrical goods. The other thing you might have to pay is port storage should your shipment spend too long in the port - our shipment arrived just before a big buddha day and so the customs office was closed for several days, there was another holiday the following week so again clearance was delayed, the result was a hefty storage charge - through no fault of our own.

If you have a working visa then there should be no import duty but......

one other piece of advise DO NOT use Robinson's International of Oxfordshire to transport your goods - we had a lot of damage and goods missing and now they do not want to pay our insurance claim in full.

Hope this helps

I'm shipping some of my personal things from North America in the next months to Thailand as well. The sea freight charge for about 40 boxes is almost $3000 and that's without customs fees. They're mostly personal things (photos, household items, etc) but also about 3 computers and 2 screens. They're 5+ years old already though, but I wonder how much taxes they will charge for those?

Would it be better to send this to my visa (marriage) or my mom's visa (retirement)?
