Missing baby could be in Thailand

Jul 31 2004

Interpol has been called in to help find the missing baby of a paedophile and his wife.

Police searching for the six-week-old infant said they believed the child was living with a member of the Thai-born mother's family after the couple were interviewed in jail.

Parents Andrew and Sakunna Milton are serving a six-month prison sentence after they refused to tell a court where they were keeping the child.

Judge Malcolm Cotterill jailed the couple for contempt of court on Thursday after they defied a court order to reveal where they were keeping the child, whose sex is not known.

The High Court sitting in Taunton was told 38-year-old Andrew Milton, from Wellington, Somerset, was considered to be a risk to children.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said they were continuing the investigation and Interpol had been contacted.

On Thursday, Judge Cotterill described Andrew Milton as a paedophile, a spokeswoman for Somerset County Council said.

Mr Milton and his 23-year-old wife, who is originally from Thailand, were arrested on Wednesday night for breaching a protection order brought by Somerset County Council's Social Services Department.

Social services had begun proceedings to place the child in care. The judge placed a Section 50 Order on the child, meaning that anyone who can help locate the child or knows anything about its whereabouts must contact police.

Businessman Milton was described by a neighbour, who did not wished to be named, as a "quiet chap".

HUNT FOR MISSING BABY

Interpol have been called in to help British police search for a newborn baby whose father is believed to be a paedophile.

Sekunna Milton and her husband Andrew were jailed for six months on Thursday after they defied an order to reveal the infant's whereabouts.

Detectives think the six-week-old baby, whose sex is unknown, is living with a member of its mother's family in Thailand.

Milton, 38, from Wellington, Somerset, is considered to be a risk to children, the High Court sitting in Taunton was told.

Milton and his Thai-born 23-year-old wife were arrested on Wednesday night for breaching a protection order brought by the county's Social Services Department.

Fears were raised when Mrs Milton went missing during her pregnancy in May and the couple were believed to be in hiding.

The Miltons returned to their home at the beginning of July following a police appeal, but without their newborn baby.

The council managed to obtain an Interim Care Order, but the baby could not be found.

A Section 50 Order has now been placed on the infant, meaning that anyone with any information on its whereabouts must contact police.

Mrs Milton was told by Judge Malcolm Cotterill, via a translator, that she would be allowed to take care of her child if she co-operated.

The judge has lifted an order preventing the identification of a minor by naming parents.

Det Insp Paul Jervis, leading the investigation, has appealed for anyone with information about the baby to contact police.

I saw another story on the wires yesterday....An alleged child sex offender, on bail for charges, managed to get a passport and escape NZ authorities....It was presumed he was headed to Thailand to get work as a teacher...

  • 2 weeks later...

What I don't understand about this story is...

Is the guy a danger to children?

If so, why isn't he in jail, or some sort of mental institution?

If not, what is social services doing trying to take the child into care?
