Thai friend of mine wants to change jobs and is considering teaching. Her English is quite good though her BBA is in Marketing. She's thinking about studying for a MA in English here in Thailand, perhaps after an intensive course or two.

So she's wondering about the job market and salaries. She can research this herself of course when she gets more serious, but just as a preliminary I wonder if anyone here happens to know. W/ an MA in English, could she find a decent teaching job easily? What would a starting salary be at a uni (public/private) or bilingual school? And after five years?

Tnx for any info. I'll pass it along.

If her English is good and not just quite good there is a market for private teaching at equal or similar rates to native speakers. This can be quite lucrative relatively speaking.

I have a thai friend teaching thai to farang, her rate is 350 baht per hour, is this normal??? cause if it is then why bother teaching english for 8k a month when she can teach farang lol

If her English is very good but not as good as a Farang, maybe she should come to the USA and teach Thai. Not sure if this is an option for her.

I know some Thai teachers here in Chiang Rai that are getting slightly less than 5000 baht a month.

I know a Thai teacher in Chiang Rai who makes over 50,000 baht a month, plus perks. That's the range.

IMHO not generally a good option.

If her English were very good, plus she had done an MA in English at Chula or Thammasat, she might be able to get a fairly decent job, especially if she had studied for a while abroad.

I know many Thai English teachers, and it is only the cream 2% who get the good jobs.

Junior teachers with MAs in public universities don't earn a lot, but there is a career path with benefits and pensions eventually (altho' nothing like we are used to having).

My (Thai) partner has a BSc in environmental science but works in an unrelated office job, salary about 14,000b a month. More than a 'new' Thai English teacher with an MA.

However, money is not everything. If she enjoys teaching and is dedicated, she could do worse.
