Thailand Automotive Institute advises changes to 2007-2011 Automotive Industry Development Plan

The Director of the Thailand Automotive Institute believes that Thailand should adjust its development strategies for the automobile industry in order to increase the nation's competitive abilities on the world market.

Mr. Wanlop Theasiri (วัลลภ เตียศิร) reports that Thailand's Master Plan for Development of its Automotive Industry from 2007-2011 will emphasize Thailand's development into a strategic automobile manufacturer with advanced production and design technology for the Asian region. Mr. Wanlop advised the government to alter the master plan by providing full state support for a flexible industry plan which can effectively respond to changing market conditions.

The Thailand Automotive Institute Director added that officials should also emphasize quality over quantity through the usage of mechanisms and policies which respond to global competition, using transparent, systematic, and strategic approaches, in addition to close cooperation between the private and public sectors.

Thai automobile industry adjusts itself to compete with China and India

Thailand’s automobile industry is preparing new strategies to compete with China and India which announced to be hubs of parts manufacturing industry in Asia.

Chief advisor to the committee drafting a 2007-2011 automobile master plan, Sutham Wanichaseni (สุธรรม วาณิชเสนี), suggests that the Thai automobile industry should adjust itself by expanding new markets abroad and use the research and development method to introduce new products to the global automobile market, including the environmental-friendly cars or eco cars.

Mr Sutham adds that the automobile industry also needs to develop human resources and suggests the government restructure the automobile tax to boost the industry’s growth.

The chief advisor affirms Thailand’s parts manufacturing industry meets international standards. The country’s pick-up trucks were popular among the South African market last year. He also expresses his confidence that Thailand has a capacity to be an important manufacturing site of automobile parts in ASEAN.
