September 24, 200718 yr I wonder if anyone can tell me what is the mixture or single fluid used when small raw red/green chili in a small bowl are served with some dishes. my guess is fish sauce or water from the nearest river .
September 24, 200718 yr Author Hmmm suppose river water would add a little something. Watched a dead dog float buy in the Chayo P a week ago, very nice, riverside resteraunts sometimes loose their charm. Will try fish sauce, maybe white vinegar ? No good asking the local, looked at me like I am off my trolley when I asked.

If the solution is clear and translucent..It's "prik num som" พริกน้ำน้ำ = vinegar with sliced chilli If the solution is brown It's "num pla prik" น้ำปลาพริก or "prik num pla"พริกน้ำปลา = fish sauce wit sliced chilli

September 24, 200718 yr Bambi, as usual, is totally correct (she's a gem!). I wondered what it was when I got it on the side of a fried rice dish. I threw the whole lot on and wow! what a kick! Thais use it sometimes like westerners use salt, as a condiment. wowza, for something so simple, it's fab! Edited September 24, 200718 yr by suegha
September 29, 200718 yr The biggest problem that I have when I ask for prik nam pla, even when I speak thai,is that they think I want little chile unless I tell them otherwise.
