Update:

One thousand homes flooded in Chiang Mai flash flood

CHIANG MAI: -- Rising floodwaters have isolated and cut off more than 1,000 homes in a village in this northern province following several hours of a heavy downpour early Saturday.

Flooding in some areas in Mae Wang district exceeded one metre after a canal overflowed its banks and carried mud-laden waterflows into villagers' houses. Roads linking villages in the district were also cut while thousands of rai of agricultural land were under water.

Emergency workers and local relief officials brought heavy trucks and flat-bottomed boats to help villagers who were stranded in their houses, but no other than inconvenience, no deaths have been reported so far.

Meanwhile, the Royal Irrigation Department announced that the flood situation in Wiang Pa Pao district in Thailand's northernmost province of Chiang Rai had returned to normal following heavy rains which had continued since Wednesday.

Flash flood in the province had destroyed two earth embankments in the district as well as inundated farms and homes.
