Victims Of The Stealth Update From Microsoft!

Victims of the Stealth Update from Microsoft!

The silent Update of Windows Vista and XP is resulting in several problems and ends for some reason in not to be able to update anyway. The file which forcing the problems is: wups2.dll.

Special after using a Repair CD for Windows XP the installed newer Updates are deleted and replaced with older versions and restore the Registry.

However, the latest version of Windows Update includes wups2.dll that was not originally present in Windows XP. After the repair install of the OS, wups2.dll remains on the system but its registry entries are missing. This mismatch is resulting in failing of installations of new updates.

The only way to resolve this problem is to alter the Registration. Here the steps which are needed to do:

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:

a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

b. At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command: net stop wuauserv and exit.

2. Register the file that is used by Windows Update and Microsoft Update. To do this, follow these steps:

a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

b. At the command prompt, type the following command, press ENTER after the command, and then click OK when you receive a verification message:

regsvr32 %windir%system32wups2.dll

Note: for x64 machines regsvr32 %windir%syswow64wups2.dll

3. Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:

a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

b. At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command: net start wuauserv and exit.

In Thailand its a crime to hack a PC and cause disruption. Can't they just issue a steath anti steath patch? Why do I have to clean up after their plumbers. :o

Reimar, how does one know if their computer has been affected by this 'stealth' download? I have a situation whereby the same 3 updates keep popping up for me to install/download. Could this be a symptom? Also, I have the wups2.dll file on my computer (I am running XP SP2 - a genuine version).

First I did a search and found that I had 1 file and two folders wups2.dll

then I follwed the steps, but concern is verification message says failed. I click ok and finish, but is that the right message? see pic

edit added I guess only M$ could do this and end up with a file like woooops.

Hi,

you should have this 2 files in Windows/system32: wups.dll (33 k) and wups2.dll (43 k) but not 2 wups2.dll!

Google about the updates to get infos what they doing.

Otherwise the MS Update has the major bad effect after repairing with Repair CD because of deleting the installed updates and replacing them with the old updates. But the new Updates need the wups2.dll for to proceed. This is why the infos need to be back to the registry!

RKASA,

seems to be that your wups2.dll is damaged! But you shouldn't have the Directories wups2.dll!

Have you deleted some updates?

Sorry I mean two files and a folder. I would think my updates are up to date with nothing missing or removed. I did the search right after your post. And I checked the updates as late as last week and again today. They look like this:post-48093-1191081715_thumb.jpg

Looks like I have a copy of wups2.dll in a sub dir. a folder and the wups2.dll, but no wups.dll that should be in the same place as wups2.dll. If I am getting this right. Googles wups2.dll found the instaructions again and several sites that want to run a scan on my PC for wups.dll errors. uniblue says they are MS partners ???? Man I have only had my XP on a few hours today and I am missing my PClinuxOC 2007 real bad. This is why linux works for me same BS, better price. (ie cheap bugs make better bugs)

Thanks Reimar for the info. It's all fixed now :D.

The reason why it didn't work the first time was that you forgot the backslashes :D:o
