Shrubbery
The Pailyn is fairly good. 1200 Baht per night. Bookable through Sawadee, or direct Tel: 055 613-3105 My wife and I have stayed there 3 or 4 times. We also had a look at the Pordee Hotel which looks good. 600 baht per night. Tel 055 6510414. www.pordeehotel.com (In Thai) We looked in the wooden bungalows and they were well equiped. Aircon, tv, fridge, good size shower room. Just read that you want a city hotel. The Pailyn is 5 or 6 mins from the old city by motorbike. Pordee is about the same. Edited October 1, 2007 by Shrubbery

We were not shown the rooms at the entrance to the Pordee, which do look conciderably older.
klikster
If it's not too inconvenient for you transportation wise, Phitsanulok is a good alternative. Topland Hotel is great (much better than Pailin, IMO, and cheaper) and has an excellent dinner buffet .. it's part of Topland plaza (shopping) and across the main road from Wat Yai .. which has one of the most beautiful Buddha images in Thailand . P'lok is about 60 km, but if you have transportation it's not so bad. I also strongly recommend the historical park at Khampaengphet. For me, it has an ambiance that Sukhothai has lost with all the tour buses and commercialism.
