Police Bans A Book... About Politics

Featured Replies

The Special Branch Police has banned a book on Thai democracy written by respected scholar Sulak Sivaraksa.

The ban on Khawn Sattawat Prachatippatai Thai (Thai Democracy After More Than Half A Century) was issued by Pol Maj-Gen Sombat Supacheeva, chief of the Special Branch Police printed media affairs section, who claimed the book ”undermines social order and public morals”.

Police said sales and distribution of the book are prohibited. They will confiscate copies already on sale.

Mr Sulak said the ban came as a surprise since the book, an anthology of his articles and speeches, was released in March. He doubted the ban was politically motivated. ” (Bangkok Post)

Sulak Sivaraksa was awarded the Alternative Nobel Prize. He was charged 2 times with lese-majeste and was a strong critic of Thaksin.

This guy has been censored and arrested quite a few times. He used to show up at Thaksin's parades and accuse ol' squarehead of adultery, and actually called the former PM a "pitiable dog" on one occasion. :o

I can think of no better way to ensure that the book becomes a big hit.

And never mind the book... what about that video?!... (no don't go there).

Banning something plays to the curiousity and love of gossip central to human nature, and nowhere better demonstrated than among Thais.

whoever was interested bought this book since published in march.

can expect that with the change of government in january book will be re-published
