Are Farang Wives The New Middle-so?

Recommended Posts

I noticed that the forum today seems to be missing a thread that I can really get my teeth into. :D

I was just wondering if other TV members felt that the increasing numbers of farang wives meant the creation of a new class in Thailand. Not High-So but not quite lo-so either.

Is there a new class devloping which for want of a better word could be called middle-so?

How can they be identified?

I realise that there is a good chance that this thread will go down like a lead baloon.

Or worse, somebody could take it seriously :o

more-so (no pun intended), it offers me a chance to put forward something ive been wondering. How Thai (and farang) view Thai men with farang wives/gfs. This has probably been addressed(many times?) in the female section and i confess to not searching first so their may be a few ppl reading this who will let out a groan "not again!". Im talking about the relationship in comparison to the now normal sight of Farang male & Thai female partnerships.

There is some stigma attached to seeing a farang male with a thai female as it can draw a lot of pre-conceived notions about their relationship. Does the same apply to Farang women with Thai males? Is there less stigma/pre-conceived ideas about them..or just different ones? Is having a Farang gf good status? Does the thai man get a pat on the back from his mates or get laughed at? Or is it only good status if the thai is not from hi-so family? Curiosity and all that jazz..so ill leave it for others to bite or not. :o

I think there is less stigma.

Any women can get laid for free.

Not all men can.

As a Farang lady living in Phuket and having a few Thai men as friends, I have a few things to say on this topic.

I find most Thai men quite attractive in one way or another. They can be quite charming as well. Quite a few have no problem inviting themselves into your bed 10 minutes after you've met them.

Ladies beware of phrases like "I come see you tonight?" "I take care of you." And even the "I love you." These can be ploys to get you in the sack or have you pick up the tab for your night out drinking. Sound familiar guys?

Do I sound bitter? Maybe a little. I've played with the fire and I've been burned!

I don't know if there is a growing number of hi-so/lo-so "Farang lady/Thai man" couples here in Thailand. But what I do see, seems to be middle-aged Farang women with Thai men half their age. Sound familiar guys?

These Thai men, from my experience, prefer to "meet up" with thier farang dates in some dark corner of a crowded bar, rather than take a chance of being seen with us on the back of their motorbikes. Just being seen walking alone with, or holding hands in public can draw quite a few looks of disapproval from Thai women (and farangs) and just as many "attaboy" looks from other Thai men. And yes, their friends tease them.

So, as one of the middle-aged Farang females in Thailand I must say; I love Thai men, most of the time. And, as long as each is getting what they want from the relationship, more power to them!

I think most men can get laid for free, the only difference is that a good looking guy would have to go to the bottom of the looks and weight barrel so to speak, where as a women who is aesthetically challenged could get someone perceived as being a bit of a looker.

Ooops, I think I have a reading comprehension problem. I was thinking of Thai wives of farang husbands. Sorry

I thought you were married to a Thai, not a farang.

It depends who is classifying the farang wives.

If I was a Thai woman watching them teetering by on precarious heels, preening and pouting as some of them do, while I flog my guts out for a few thousand baht a month, I think I'd hate them.

Maybe I'd call them the Oh-So-Low-So.

that comment could oh so easily be reversed Andrew Hicks. could just as easily be the farang wives watching the thai wives too.

Well, being a middle-so farang wife I feel obligated to answer! I would say that just as for Thai women that marry farang have 'good status' in the eyes of many, the same applies to Thai men with farang wives...I believe it's due to 1) the white skin and 2) Thai's perception that all farang are rich.

It's funny you say do they get a pat on the back because my husband has literally had this happen quite a few times! I find it very amusing because a lot of people just can't hold their excitement in...big wide eyes, back clapping..."you got a farang" type conversation (assuming I can't understand!!) followed by a million questions about how and where we met, if I've got friends or family that they can hook up with...My husband is from a middle class, educated family as am I. It's never been a status thing for him (as far as I know! :D ) but I think he gets a buzz out of it when people congratulate him about getting a farang! Can't suppress the ego all the time :D It only happens now if we run into one of his long lost friends or meet people travelling which isn't very often.

The wife would be in whatever class she'd be in before she got married. Some may THINK or try to look like they're in a higher class after marrying a foreigner (and sporting the token goods) but most can see through it in Thailand. The big question is if a Thai lady was in a high social class before marriage and she married Mr Average farang, would she have to psychologically fight to stay in that circle?

so does this mean that ex-bg wives are the ho-so class? :D

:o

That is not necessarily so! As you may remember in the movie 'Pretty Woman', Julia Roberts who played a hi-so-ho eventually married Richard Gere who was hi-so which would have then made her a hi-hi-so-ex-ho ! :D

You can tell the new middle-so from the fact that they buy their clothes from Tesco instead of the local market. :o

I don't think my Thai wife thinks much about it either way. She doesn't own a dress or even a tube of lipstick. She's just a farm girl and if you saw her in her farming clothes you wouldn't know if she were a man or a woman. Her hat has a shoulder length piece that covers her neck and ties under her nose. My few long sleeve, long tailed shirts have been appropriated. My feet would rot off if I wore rubber boots and no socks like she does.
