How To Turn Volume Up

Featured Replies

I have an IBM ThinkPad and the volume on it is crap. I have turned up the little vol button to the top and when in youtube I turn that volume up but no luck, even with earphones.

How can I increase the volume for listening to music?

Funny you should ask :o

Thinkpads, and I'm sure most notebooks, have one volume control in hardware, and one in Windows. On the Thinkpad, the volume controls should be next to your ThinkVantage button.

Once you've got that to its highest setting, next there should be a volume control in your system tray (bottom right of your screen) - then you can adjust the software to your liking - or turn that up all the way then use the hardware buttons in the future. If you don't see that, go to Control Panel, look for Sounds (or Multimedia, I'm on Vista so can't remember any more) and in there should be an option to show volume control in your systray.

thanks onethai, funnilyenough I am currently listening to this

and the volume is much better - so probably depends on the recording as well?

Can you talk me thru how to find the volume controls near the Think Vantage cos I can't find either

cheers

Strange, maybe your model isn't laid out quite like mine. Yes, the recording makes a difference as well.

You should see some silver round buttons on your Thinkpad - those should be mute, volume down, and volume up.

If they're not there - then you're probably going to have to use your blue Fn button, and look on the top row of keys labeled F1 F2 F3 etc. There should be some blue symbols on those keys, the symbols literally look like speakers (with a slash drawn through the mute, down arrow for volume down, and up arrow for volume up). Press and hold the Fn button, then one of the speaker buttons.

Once you figure out the hardware controls, when you press on any of them you should see an indicator on your screen.

I don't like to admit it, but that struck a chord with me too. When my Thinkpad was new I was VERY disappointed with the VERY low volume. Surfing the Internet for information gave me no hints except that other people must have had the same problems. My old Thinkpad had plenty of volume so I decided that the new one must have a defect. THEN, I decided to read the instructions. BINGO!
