By Surasak Glahan, Bangkok Post

The People Power party (PPP) drew around 25,000 people for its first major rally in Bangkok at Sanam Luang yesterday where the party promised to continue the legacy of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

No major new policies were unveiled, with the main message put across to supporters that the ideas laid down by Thai Rak Thai would prevail.

((cut))

Yesterday?

I thought the Thai voters liked their politicians to be photogenic ... Like Mr.A and Mr.A. :o

Naka.

Yesterday?

Yes. It is still "Breaking News" on the BKK Post website. I posted a portion of the article (several minutes ago); I didn't post the entire article. My posting was nonetheess "cut"? Some political agenda here?

Yesterday?

Yes, yesterday.

And i do believe that this is just the tip of the iceberg, and i do believe that the PPP might become the strongest party after the next elections. TRT and Thaksin still has huge support, and yesterday's event has clearly shown that PPP is campaigning on that. TRT colors and design were chosen, the speeches concentrated on Thaksin's achievements. Whatever one may prefer, but people who think that TRT and Thaksin have no popular support might receive a nasty wake up call after the elections.

This government has completely failed to decrease TRT support, has completely failed to present alternatives. Price rise of necessities, mass lay offs in the industrial centers, return of drugs and worsening crime situation will play into the hands of PPP, and in the end - Thaksin.

There are very interesting times ahead of us now.

Much of the developments of the last year have never been publicized in the medias, or grossly misreported on. Much of what is to come here now will come as a surprise for most people who depend on the media for information.

Thanks much. But really, this "breaking news" has been on the BKK Post website all day. I was surprised that nobody else posted it before. I was --and still am-- surprised that the other BKK "newspaper" didn't say a word on the subject. Rather curious, isn't it? Or is it???

Any examples , for what might or is very likely to happen ?

Just curious .

In the Nation breaking news there is a small article, but that has numbered the attendance at about 3000 people. Which is in their tradition of faking numbers up or down, whatever the side their owners support or despise.

Here is a interesting article by Shawn Crispin:

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Southeast_Asia/IJ13Ae03.html

Examples of misreporting/censorship:

-The Thewet clashes, only well and realistically reported by Asiasentinel.com.

-The continuous demonstrations against the coup, and the massive efforts of the government and military trying to stop upcountry people from attending.

-The mass layoffs in the industrial belt are still not much reported on at all.

-The sometimes very nasty events behind the political scene only came out in rumors.

What is likely to happen?

PPP will be the strongest party after the elections because support for TRT and Thaksin is unchanged, which will lead to further tensions.

And that is only what can be safely posted here without breaking the rules.

No political agenda - simply the Bangkok Post's vigorous assertion of their copyright which forbids TV from carrying whole articles from them.

You mean like Khun Chavalit and Khun Banhard? :D

Thanks for the link Colpyat !

Very interesting indeed , some information is now seconded what I heared on the streets as well!

I appreciate your response very much.

PPP will not be allowed to win an election. They are only allowed to exist as a compromise. Winning an election is not a comprise. Those in charge will re-coup before that sun rises.

There is the possibility.

The problem though is that the international community, and highly necessary foreign investment, would not tolerate another coup. And i wonder if the Thai people would tolerate another one either.

I wish for that too.

Bangkokians taking pics with soldiers and tanks, taking their kids to the scene, that does not enhance any hope of a civil government.

all they have to do is stir up some controversy and evidence that thaskin and fromer TRT's are behind PPP which is probably true anyways and that they are in violation of the courts previous rulings, etc, name Sondthi acting Prime Mininister and set elections for Dec 2008. the thai people wanted the coup, too late to jump sides.

the thai people wanted the coup, too late to jump sides.

Some sectors of Thai society wanted the coup. Another coup will not be that easy. And it would be a catastrophe for Thailand's international standing, debilitate foreign investment. The Generals know that.

Some hardliners may not care, and that is a worry.

People Power Party to rally in Bangkok

The party expects 70,000 people to attend.

PPP salutes Thaksin legacy

The People Power Party (PPP) drew around 25,000 people for its first major rally in Bangkok at Sanam Luang yesterday where the party promised to continue the legacy of ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra. No major new policies were unveiled, with the main message put across to supporters that the ideas laid down by TRT would prevail. ''Samak [sundaravej] will become a prime minister like Thaksin for you,'' said party spokesman Kuthep Saikrachang on stage. However, PPP leader Samak spent little time talking of what he and his party will do if they are voted into power, with most of his speech focusing on how great a leader Thaksin had been. Samak said PPP was almost complete in its efforts to ensure it had 480 candidates ready to run for every parliamentary seat in the Dec 23 general election.
