Couldn't help but notice, that on the locked topic 'Interpol In Rare Sex Abuse Appeal' Post no. 6 had the following, interesting segment :

<<<<Intense investigative support from authorities in South Korea and Thailand revealed the man flew from Seoul to Bangkok International Airport on Thursday, 11 October, with security cameras documenting his arrival at immigration at 3.26pm.>>>>

Aren't these new-fangled cameras (the ones that take your photo at the immigration desk) supposed to photo-analyse a persons features and cross-reference them on an interpol database before flagging up a 'warning do not let this person enter country!' type warning??

Or are they just bog-standard surveillance ones?

It seems that either they just take your picture, the operator didn't work it properly or are just for show!

they take a snapshot of you and attach it to your enrty record. i actually saw my record one time when the immigration officer flipped her monitor to ask one of her colleague.

On the main road into torquay in devon there were cops all over the place everyone thought it was for tax discs, turned out it was face recognition cameras and they arrested 15 wanted crims ! talk about big brother,. does seem strange that that nonce got through bkk airport ok, maybe his name hadnt been added to flag yet, but they are onto him now and il bet they get him,.i for one think all this technology is great for us non crims , must be hel for them ! I doubt that in general they could identify a criminal in real time. Chances are they allow the police/immigration to track who has entered the kingdom.

Must have a different system in the uk as they were pulling the cars with offenders in and nicking them ! :o

Where I came through a couple of weeks ago the Immigration girl took my photo, smiled and mentioned something about my face being recognized so I guess the cameras do work.

this system was operational in the London City as a measure against the IRA since around 1992 and in the Irish airports from the mid nineties. Since than much more improved but still imperfect. They might be only trying that system in Torquay or more probably they were working on a tip off about some gang meeting

LOL - bog standard - in fact you might find better ones in some bog's.

They are certainly not analysing faces for wanted guy's - they do not even have that toy in Singapore yet and they like their toys - I did hear talk of it though.

The guy in question was probably tracked by his name on a passenger manifest.

I think they do have it in some places in the UK but not everywhere - its mostly surveilance - cost's too much :D

A few years ago, there was rumours of the airport looking to pilot such system, where they would be able to track down passenger, when it's time to board the plane ...

:o It isn't possible to run an on-line photo recognition system at the airport arrival. The cameras merely take your picture and then it is run elsewhere in a batch recognition system. (maybe I shouldn't have told you that). If you think the immigration lines are long now, just imagine how long it would take if each person who entered had to be identified with a photo database. The technology isn't up to it yet. It's fasr, but not that fast. It doesn't work as well in real life as the american T.V. show C.S.I. shows it happens.

:D
